For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. (Eph. 5:8-10)
I really hate the dark. When I was a child, my mother would go through periods of depression and close the house up so that it was dark. I hated it. I would go behind and open the curtains. Who really wants to be in the dark especially after finding the light? This scripture tells us that once we find the light we should continue in it and find out what is pleasing to the Lord.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God. (John 3:19-21)
Ephesians tells us that fruit of the Spirit is all goodness, righteousness, and truth. John says that he who does the truth comes to the light and his deeds can be seen. Light exposes things. That is why those who do evil do it in the dark. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10)
This scripture tells us how special we are after He has called us out of the darkness into His light. He made us special through His mercy. How can we want to turn from that?
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. (Matt 7:15-19)
How do we know if we are in the light? We can see by the fruit that we bear. We began by saying that the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, ”The LORD will judge His people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Heb 10:26-31)
The admonition in this lesson is that once we get out of the darkness we should continue in the light. This refers to our actions which should reflect goodness, righteousness, and truth. We are to find out what is acceptable to the Lord. The best way to stay in the light, to bear good fruit, and to find out what is acceptable is to stay in the Word. In John 1, Jesus is referred to as Life, the Light, and the Word.
If we want to walk in the light and be acceptable to Him, we must stay focused in the Word.
