Then they spat in His face, and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?" (Matthew 26:67-68) And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked, saying, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck You?" (Luke 22:64)
If you saw the movie The Passion of Christ, and saw the actor portraying Christ being beaten, you will likely never forget what you saw on the screen. If what happened to Jesus was even half as bad as it was portrayed in the movie, then it was horrendous! I had to turn my eyes away from the screen because it hurt me so to watch what the mob was doing to "our Lord." It was awful!
In Isaiah 50:6, we find a prophesy of what was going to happen to Christ: "I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out my beard; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting."
Can you imagine people spitting in the face of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? And not only that, but the beating He took on our behalf. They tormented Him by blindfolding Him, and they mocked Him to see if He knew who was hitting Him. Of course, He knew! He just did not satisfy them by telling them. He went though all this horror because of His great love for us.
And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling aroma. (Ephesians 5:2)
Grace to you and peace from God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. (Galatians 1:3-4)
God sent His only Son to this earth to be the sacrifice for our sins. Do you realize Jesus died for the very ones who spit in His face and for the ones who mocked Him, beat Him, an even crucified Him? I don't imagine any of us would even think about spitting in the face of another human being, let alone the Son of God. However, when we disobey God, it is really like a slap in the face to Him. It tells Him we don't care. Who struck Him? We did!!
Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." We show our love by obeying Him. Conversely, we show our lack of love by disobeying Him.
We need to think about these things as we live our daily lives!
