Lesson 3 Genesis chapter 8 through chapter 11 verses 1-9
150 days (One hundred fifty days) 8:3
3. What was the first recorded act of Noah when he left the ark? When he left, his action was to obey God's command to: Take with him his sons, wife, sons' wives and every animal, creeping thing, bird, whatever creeps on the earth. Then he built an altar to the Lord, took from every clean animal and clean bird and offered burnt offerings to God. 8:18-20
(This is a good place to consider some of the problems with environmental issues like global warming)
6. What food was man now allowed to eat and what was the restriction on it? "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." 9:3
Note: This gives us God’s feelings on the death sentence.
15. What was significant about the name Peleg and what might that be talking about? Peleg means division. The Bible says, "for in his days the earth was divided." 10:25 That might be referring to the time God created different languages. Some believe that the continents were united and then came apart after the flood at this time. There is no proof of this either way. God very easily could have created the earth exactly as it is now. However, the flood also produced many of the scientific “evidences” such as fossils, etc that man wants to say prove the earth’s age as millions of years old.
Bonus: What city came from this place later on? Babylon
Thought Questions:
A. Describe some things that might have happened to the earth as a result of the flood that are often used as proof of evolution and that the earth is millions of years old. Also, discuss the problem with God’s promise vs. man’s ideas of global warming, etc. Many of the fossils and layers in the earth could have easily formed under the water pressure. The great pressure of the water could have caused the continents to divide as mentioned earlier. God promised that the seasons would continue, so I don’t believe our earth will burn itself up until God is ready no matter what man does or does not do. However, God did give us the care of the earth, so we should take care of it. Just remember that He is in charge regardless of what man thinks.
B. Although God did not condemn Noah for being drunk, it definitely caused a problem. There are no direct commands in the Bible that say, "Thou shalt not drink alcohol ." However, using scriptures, list reasons why the best decision would be to abstain. Think about wisdom in Proverbs and our appearances to the world in the New Testament. Also, alcohol leads to drunkenness which is in the lists of sins in the New Testament.
B.) Some admonitions against drinking alcohol and/or for abstinence: Lev. 10:9,10 (command to the priests); Num. 6:3 (Nazarites vow); Judg. 13:4,13-14(Samson was a Nazarite from birth) Lk. 1:15 (John the Baptist was also a Nazarite from birth) Whenever someone was consecrated or took a special vow before God he was told to abstain.
Prov. 20:1; 21:17; 23:20,29-32; 31:4,5. Wisdom dictates that we beware of alocohol for all of the problems it may cause.
Is. 5:11,22; 24:9; 28:1,3,7. ;Jer 35:2-10,14,18-19. Ezek. 44:21 (priests). Hos. 4:11 warnings and punishement for those who have strayed and allowed alcohol to rule them and cloud their judgment
Rom. 14:21 (may casue someone else to stumble) Eph. 5:18. Titus 2:3 Drunkeness- at what point does one become drunk? It is different for different people and sometimes in different circumstances.
The best way is abstinence and there will be nothing to lead you astray or anyone else.
C. I would also like you to state some additional thoughts, ideas, questions, or applications that you gleaned from this week's reading. In your own words, what did you get out of the reading?
In this week’s reading we can learn about God’s love and ability to restore even when things are destroyed. We, also, learn that no matter how smart man things he is God is truly in control.
