TZG-3 STATS AND ANSWERS

Lesson 3 Genesis chapter 8 through chapter 11 verses 1-9

  1. How many days did the water cover the earth?

150 days  (One hundred fifty days)  8:3

  1. Name the 2 types of birds Noah sent out from the ark.  Raven and dove  8:7-8

3.     What was the first recorded act of Noah when he left the ark?  When he left, his action was to obey God's command to:  Take with him his sons, wife, sons' wives and every animal, creeping thing, bird, whatever creeps on the earth. Then he built an altar to the Lord, took from every clean animal and clean bird and offered burnt offerings to God.   8:18-20

  1. Quote God’s promise to mankind after the flood.  In His heart He said, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.  While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease."     8:21-22

(This is a good place to consider some of the problems with environmental  issues like global warming)

  1. What command was given to Noah that was also given to Adam?  "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." 9:1

  6. What food was man now allowed to eat and what was the restriction on it?  "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." 9:3

  1. What was the penalty for murder?  "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man." 9:6

Note: This gives us God’s feelings on the death sentence.

  1. What was the sign of God’s covenant with Noah?  The rainbow    9:13

  1. What occupation did Noah have after the flood?  He was a farmer 9:20

  1. What did he produce and what problem did it cause?  He produced grape juice which fermented and turned to wine with alcohol in it. He drank some, proceeded to get drunk and went to sleep in his tent where he became uncovered. His son, Ham, went in, saw Noah naked and then told his brothers who went in and covered Noah without looking at him.  When Noah found out what Ham had done he cursed Canaan, Ham's son.  9:21-24

  1. What mistake did Ham make?  Showed disrespect for his father. 9:22

  1. What people came from Japheth?  The main ones were Russians, Teutons, Gauls and Britons.  (They settled in Asia Minor, Armenia, Caucasus and Europe.) 10:5 a little geographical research will show the other info and that they eventually became Europeans, but I will accept what the Bible directly says in vs 5.

  1. What was Nimrod, descendant of Ham known for?  Being a mighty hunter before the Lord. 10:8

  1. What nations came from Ham?  The main nations were Ethiopians, Egyptians, Tybians and Canaanites. (They settled the continent of Africa.) These were the nations that fought against the Israelites all of those years. 10:15-19

 15. What was significant about the name Peleg and what might that be talking about?  Peleg means division. The Bible says, "for in his days the earth was divided."  10:25 That might be referring to the time God created different languages.  Some believe that the continents were united and then came apart after the flood at this time. There is no proof of this either way. God very easily could have created the earth exactly as it is now. However, the flood also produced many of the scientific “evidences” such as fossils, etc that man wants to say prove the earth’s age as millions of years old.

  1. As time passed what did man decide to do in the land of Shinar?  Men forgot God's commandment to multiply and fill the earth.  They became so proud they started to build a city with a tower tall enough to reach the heavens for fear they'd end up scattered all over the earth. 11:4

  1. What was God’s answer to their plans and why?  God went down and confused their language so they couldn't understand each other and scattered them all over the earth. 11:7-8 This forced them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth as they were commanded, not just one place but everywhere.

  1. What was the name of this place?  Babel.  11:9

Bonus: What city came from this place later on? Babylon

 Thought Questions:

 A. Describe some things that might have happened to the earth as a result of the flood that are often used as proof of evolution and that the earth is millions of years old. Also, discuss the problem with God’s promise vs. man’s ideas of global warming, etc. Many of the fossils and layers in the earth could have easily formed under the water pressure.  The great pressure of the water could have caused the continents to divide as mentioned earlier. God promised that the seasons would continue, so I don’t believe our earth will burn itself up until God is ready no matter what man does or does not do. However, God did give us the care of the earth, so we should take care of it.  Just remember that He is in charge regardless of what man thinks.

 B.  Although God did not condemn Noah for being drunk, it definitely caused a problem. There are no direct commands in the Bible that say, "Thou shalt not drink alcohol ."  However, using scriptures, list reasons why the best decision would be to abstain.  Think about wisdom in Proverbs and our appearances to the world in the New Testament. Also, alcohol leads to drunkenness which is in the lists of sins in the New Testament.

B.) Some admonitions against drinking alcohol and/or for abstinence: Lev. 10:9,10 (command to the priests); Num. 6:3 (Nazarites vow); Judg. 13:4,13-14(Samson was a Nazarite from birth) Lk. 1:15 (John the Baptist was also a Nazarite from birth) Whenever someone was consecrated or took a special vow before God he was told to abstain.

Prov. 20:1; 21:17; 23:20,29-32; 31:4,5. Wisdom dictates that we beware of alocohol for all of the problems it may cause.

Is. 5:11,22; 24:9; 28:1,3,7. ;Jer  35:2-10,14,18-19. Ezek. 44:21 (priests). Hos. 4:11 warnings and punishement for those who have strayed and allowed alcohol to rule them and cloud their judgment

Rom. 14:21 (may casue someone else to stumble) Eph. 5:18. Titus 2:3 Drunkeness- at what point does one become drunk? It is different for different people and sometimes in different circumstances.

The best way is abstinence and there will be nothing to lead you astray or anyone else.

 C. I would also like you to state some additional thoughts, ideas, questions, or applications that you gleaned from this week's  reading. In your own words, what did you get out of the reading?

In this week’s reading we can learn about God’s love and ability to restore even when things are destroyed. We, also, learn that no matter how smart man things he is God is truly in control.
