10. What does God give Job the opportunity to do after He finishes questioning him? Answer Him. 40:2

11. How does Job answer Him? Job says he is evil or vile and he will shut his mouth, he cannot answer Him. 40:4-5

Concerning the use of the word "vile".  The connotation for this word in our society does have the meaning of "sinfulness" and "dirtiness" connected with it.  I think that Job was not calling himself sinfully dirty but totally degraded:

4"Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? (NASV)

4Behold, I am of small account and vile!  (AV)

4 "I am unworthy—how can I reply to  you?  (NIV)

4Behold, I am nought: what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.  (Darby)

I am so insignificant. How can I answer You?
I place my hand over my mouth.   (Holman)

"I am unworthy—how can I reply to you?  (TNIV)

It looks to me like Job is trying to say he is unworthy or insignificant or humiliated.  He has  pretty low self esteem at this point.

12. What is God's next question for Job? Will you annul My judgment or condemn Me to justify yourself? 40:8

13. What does God say Job should do if he is as great as God? Humble the proud. 40:10-13

14. What does God say can save him if he is able to humble the proud? His own right hand. 40:14

15. What other created being does God talk about with Job at this point? The Behemoth. 40:15

16.  No matter what happens to the behemoth what does God say about him? He does not become disturbed. 40:23

17. What is the name of the beast God is describing in these passages? The leviathan. 41:1

18. Everything under heaven belongs to whom? God. 41:11

19. What was Job’s response to God’s questioning? I am nothing and I know nothing. He repented in dust and ashes. Job 42:1-6

20. What did God demand of Job’s 3 friends? He told them to take sacrifices to Job and let him pray for them and then God would accept them. 42:7-8

22. What gifts did Job’s family, friends, and acquaintances bring him? A piece of money and a ring of gold. 42:11

23. What else did God replace besides Job’s possessions? He gave him 10 more children. 42:13

24. What were the names of Job’s daughters and what was said about them? Jemimah, Keziah, Keren-happuch, they were beautiful and received inheritance among their brothers. 42:14-15

Thought Questions:

A. After reading God’s questioning of Job, explain the power of God as best you can. How does that make you feel? I love this part of Job. I can’t think of anywhere else in the Bible that describes the power of God. It shows how small we really are and how little we know. Whenever we are feeling proud, this is a great place to go to remind ourselves of what we actually are. On the other hand, if you feel like you are all alone, God can’t handle your problems, they are too trivial or no one cares, remember how much control God truly commands. Look at how much He knows about the animals and how much He cares for them. This passage is truly awesome and helps us keep our lives in perspective.

B. Why is it significant that Job’s daughters are mentioned and that they shared in the inheritance? Inheritance for daughters was not the custom of the time. Most genealogies and head counts record just the sons and only the sons were given an inheritance. Maybe Job valued all his children, even more than before, after all he had lost. It is hard to say why the daughters are mentioned here. Perhaps it shows that God values women in the role for which He created us.

C.  Thoughts for the week. As I stated before I really love the end of Job. God’s power is so evident when He begins to speak. It even comes out in the written word. Just imagine if you could have heard Him as Job did. To think that we are in His care and control is too great for my human mind to fathom when looked at in light of His mighty power. Then to think that he has called us His children and I am so small and weak and sinful. How could He look at me in such a tender way? His love is truly a gift and blessing in and of itself. Regardless of any physical human blessings, we are truly blessed just to be loved by Him.
