Thought Questions:
A. Describe how you might feel if you
knew that God was not with you – nor was He going with you – as you
faced life's physical, mental, and spiritual battles… because of your
sin. This thought brings tears to my eyes and
breaks my heart. I talk to God all of the time, daily and hourly. The
thought of Him not being there anymore is more than I can bear or
imagine. I think I would sink into the deepest depression. David
addresses this feeling in a couple of His Psalms. Read Ps.
51 which David wrote after he sinned with Bathsheba. He is pouring out a
broken heart as he begs for God's forgiveness. This Psalm always brings
me to tears as I remember my own weaknesses. In verse 11 he begs God,
"Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy
Spirit from me." Ps.
38 also shares David's anguish over his sin and how it affects him
physically. A life without God is empty and meaningless as Solomon says
in Ecclesia stes.
Everything
in life is vanity. Eccl. 12:13 says, " Let us hear the conclusion
of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments , For this is
man's all ." I don't EVER want to be without my God.
B. God repeatedly tells the Israelites
that they must obey Him completely to receive His blessings. Find
scriptures in the New Testament that emphasize the need for total and
complete obedience to His word. Acts 5: 32 And we
are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy
Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."
Heb 5: 7 who, in the days of His
flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement
cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was
heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet
He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been
perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey
Him,
Heb 11 talks about all of those in the OT
who were blessed because they obeyed Him.
Rom 1:5 Through Him we have received
grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for
His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
Rom6:15 What then? Shall we sin because
we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know
that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's
slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of
obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that
though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that
form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
II Cor 10:4 For the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down
strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts
itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into
captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all
disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled .
God offers grace because we cannot
ever earn our salvation, but at the same time he expects obedience to
His will and we can't be saved without our obedience.
