Exodus 22-24

At this point, the next couple of chapters will deal with a variety of laws. I will not go into great detail with these, but rather ask questions of a general kind regarding the law. We may at least outline the law or go over in a little more detail at the end of Deuteronomy.

1.  In general, what was required of one who lost, damaged, or destroyed another person's property? They had to make some kind of restitution. 22:1-14

2.  At what point would a man be guilty of bloodshed if he killed a thief breaking in?
If it were after sunrise. 22:3

3.  When would the parties in a theft go before the judge? If something is stolen while in someone other than the owner's hands and the thief is not found , 22:8, OR

If there is a dispute about the property and to whom it belongs. 22:9

4.  State the situations in which no restitution would be required. If an animal was in another one's hands and it was taken or injured when no one was looking, that person would take an oath before the Lord that he had not harmed the animal. 22:10-11 If it's stolen, he shall make restitution. 22:12 If it is attacked by a wild animal, he is to show the remains as evidence and he will not be required to make restitution. 22:13 If an ything is borrowed and dies or is injured in the presence of the owner, he does not have to pay OR if it is hired that money covers the loss. 22:14-15

11. What are you to do if you find the animal of an enemy? Return it . 23:4

17.  What should not come out of their mouths? The name of other gods. 23:13

18.  Name the three feasts of the year and why they were celebrated. Feast of unleavened Bread (Passover) to remember their escape from Egypt, Feast of Harvest to give back to God the firstfruits of their labor and Feast of the Ingathering when they had gathered in the fruit of their labors from the field. 23:15-16

Thought Questions:

A.  When looking at the laws in this section and then looking at the things Christ said in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7), what can we learn about God and how He feels about our relationships and how we treat one another? God has always cared about justice and righteousness. He has always cared about the fatherless, widows, and strangers. James 1:27 The New Testament is really a fulfillment of the law that God established with the Israelites. Matt 5:17 God believes in being responsible for our commitments. It is important for us to do what is right, take responsibility for our actions, and treat others fairly. Matt 7:12

B. What law or laws shows us that God already wanted His people to love - or at least show kindness to - their enemies? If you see your enemies' animal astray or struggling under its burden, you should help or return it. I don't see anywhere in these laws that God gives excuses to anyone for their actions or a reason to lash out at someone who may have wronged them. It is interesting to note how many of our laws today seem to originate in the Mosaic Law given at this time. He never even gave them excuses to mistreat their servants. The point is God 's character does NOT change. We begin to understand Him over time a little better, but that does not mean that He has changed in any way. The study of the Old Testament is very important and it shows that the NT was not really new, but rather the fulfillment of what God has always expected for His people. The character of God does not and will not change no matter what is going on in this old world.
