Thought Questions:

  1. According to Gen. 6 when the sons of God (the righteous) saw the daughters of men (the unrighteous) and married them the result was fewer and fewer righteous people. They became violent and ruthless. There is a principle here that carries throughout the Bible in all three dispensations. What is it? God does not like his people to intermarry. Righteous and unrighteous, Jew and pagan, or Christian  and non-Christian. He loves us and knows all of the problems for unequally yoked couples. He also knows that the unbeliever can cause you to fall.

Please find  a scripture for this principle in the Mosaic (OT after Exodus) and the Christian [Dispensation/Era/NT?]  "and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.  Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.  For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the LORD will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly Deut. 7:2-4; Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?  And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. 2Cor. 6:14-16

Why do you think God requires this from his people? He loves us and knows all of the problems for unequally yoked couples. He also knows that the unbeliever can cause you to fall.

 Note: The 3 Dispensations:

    1. Patriarchal Dispensation: The father was responsible for the spiritual welfare of the family. He acted as priest to make sacrifices before God.
    2. Mosaic Dispensation: The law of Moses given to him by God on Mt. Sinai for the Israelite nation. There were, however, Gentiles who continued to worship God in the Patriarchal fashion.
    3. Christian Dispensation: From the resurrection of Christ and the establishment of the church in Acts 2 to the present day. There will never be another dispensation or covenant. All of time points to the cross and salvation for all men. Those under the old law are still saved because of Christ’s death. It validated everything else.
  1. How explicit were God’s instructions on how to build the ark and what to take, etc? Explain the way this shows how much God cares about details in our life, our worship and walk with Him. How important is it to follow His exact instructions instead of just doing things "close enough" ?

In the account of Noah God gave Moses very specific instructions about how to build the ark, what to take, etc. God cares very much about how we live our life and worship Him. We can’t do whatever we feel is right. We must constantly study the Word in order to determine what His will is and not our own, II Tim. 3:15, We are commanded several places throughout the Bible not to add to or subtract from His word (Deut. 4:2., 12:32; Prov. 30:6; Rev. 22:18) We must always strive to know His word and be diligent in our study so that we can be pleasing to Him.

C. Please contribute some additional thoughts, ideas, questions, or applications that you gleaned from this week's reading. In your own words,  what did you get out of the reading?

The things I learned this week, had to do with the 2 thought questions. 1) that God always disapproved of the righteous and the unrighteous marrying and 2) that God cares very much about details by the way He very carefully explained to Noah what to do.  I also see that, no matter how hard something is or how small we may be, God always sees and rewards the faithful.
