Thought Questions:

A. What can we learn from Jacob’s patience and His ability to trust God to work things out for his good? Jacob seemed like he started out with conditional type of faith. If God would do this….., he would serve Him.(28:20) It seems like he didn’t even get angry with Laban until the very end. Laban repeatedly tricked him and he continued to work hard for him. In the New Testament, Jesus says that we are to go the extra mile, give our tunic as well as our shirt. "If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away." Matt 5:40-42

Paul also tells us in the letter to the Romans that we are to allow God to work His vengeance. Everything goes better it we let God fight our battles instead of trying to get our own revenge.

"Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore
“ If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
" Rom. 12:17-20

B. From the beginning God said one man and one woman. Abraham and Isaac appear to have had only one wife. Acts, chapter 17, talks about God overlooking the ignorance of men concerning other gods. It seems that He also allowed them to have many wives. Not only did Jacob have more than one wife, so did David, Solomon, etc. Look at these men and others and list some of the problems that arise out of this arrangement, why God’s original plan is the best plan and what He expects of us.  More than one wife creates jealousy which leads to all kinds of sins. God said that the two shall become one at the beginning with Adam and Eve. It is truly degrading for a woman to not be held in special regard by her husband. Even Rachel and Leah said that they did not owe their father any loyalty because he had sold them. (Gen.31:15) Those in our world who think that Christianity looks down on women, does not know God’s plan at all. If you truly look at all that God has to say to the church in Ephesus, He commands husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. That means he is willing to die for her. Eph 5:25-29 It goes further to say that he should love his wife as himself and nurture and care for her. I doubt if the women in these relationships with men who had several wives felt like they were cared for as much as a woman with one man who cherishes her. I Pet 3:7 says that husbands should dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to her as the weaker vessel, being heirs together. It says that their prayers might be hindered if they don't do this. I believe that God said one man and one woman from the beginning because He knew this was best for us. I don’t believe that meant one at a time either. One man one woman for life protects everyone including the children. God’s plan is always best!
