Thought Questions:

A. How do Abraham’s actions prove his faith? Find a NT scripture that speaks about this. Faith is shown through our actions as James says. When Abraham took Isaac to sacrifice him as God asked he showed his complete faith and trust in God and His promises. James 2:18-24: "But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only."

B. Why was it important to Abraham to pay for the land rather than accept it for free? He did not want the people of that land to say that they had made him great. He wanted to insure that only God received the glory.

C. What can we learn from Rebekah’s obedience and submission to the will of God? I believe it started with obedience to her father and grandfather. Someone had taught her of God and she trusted that this was from Him. I Pet 3:1-8 tells women to be submissive to their own husbands. We are instructed to be chaste in our conduct, and to be precious to God with a gentle and quiet spirit. This is true beauty. It tells us that this how the holy women of old behaved, so we can learn how to trust God completely from Rebekah. This is not an easy task and sometimes takes a lifetime to accomplish, especially in this self-sufficient, "me-first" society in which we live. We need to remember who we are to follow God in all things.
