1. Who was identified as the priest of
Midian is Exodus 2:18?

2. This man gave his

Ans.:
3. That would make the man in #1 the
father-in-law of Moses. But in Exodus 3:1 who is said to be the priest of
Midian, the father-in-law of Moses?
Ans.:
(It is not uncommon to find
characters in the Bible with two names. Simon called Peter, Saul of Tarsus was
later called Paul, and Abram was called Abraham. This in and of itself could
account for the same man in #1 and #3 being given two different names; however
in this case the Hebrew word translated 'father-in-law' (3:1) can also be
translated as 'a relative by marriage.' Since 40 years had passed since Moses
began his sojourn in the land of Midian, his father-in-law (Reuel) could have
died and his son (Jethro), if indeed this is the case, would have taken his
place as the priest of Midian. Scholars are not in agreement as to which of
these two possibilities is correct. This writer has always assumed they
were the same individual. This is not a matter of faith. pjd)
