1. Looking back into the last verse of Genesis, where was Josephs body?
    Ans.: In a coffin in Egypt.
 
2. Time has passed and Joseph's "rule" over Egypt is ended. Both he, his brothers and all of that generation of Israelites died in Egypt. What is said about their strength?
    Ans.: They were fruitful, increased abundantly, grew exceeding might, and th land was filled with them.
 

3. What changes took place that would affect the lives of the children of Israel?

    Ans.: There arose a new king over Egypt which did not know Joseph.
 

4. What was he afraid the Israelites might do?
    Ans.: Since the Israelites were mightier than the Egyptians, the king was afraid that in case of war Israel might join their enemies and fight against them.
 

5. How did the king intend to "deal wisely" with them (vss.10-11)
    Ans.: They set taskmasters, or slave drivers over them to afflict them with burdens. They made them build treasure cities for Pharaoh.
 

6. What were the name of the treasure cities the Israelites built for Pharaoh?
    Ans.: Pithon & Raamses.
 

7. Did all this labor weaken the Israelites?
    Ans.: No. The more they were afflicted the more they grew.
 

8. How did the Egyptians respond to the strength of Israel?

    Ans.: They made their lives bitter with bondage and made them work with brick, mortar, and in farming.
 

9. What happens to young people when they do hard work?
    Ans.: They become strong.
 

10. What happened to the Israelites as they worked under hard task masters?
    Ans.: They became stronger.
 

11. What instruction did Pharaoh give to the midwives that attended the Israelite women?
    Ans.: Kill the sons that are being born but save the daughters.
 

12. What did the midwives do?
    Ans.: They feared God and saved the men children.
 

13. How did they explain this to Pharaoh?
        Ans.: They said the Hebrew women were lively and would give birth before the midwives could get to them.
 

14. How did God bless the midwives?
    Ans.: God blessed them with households and prosperous families.
 

15. What was Pharaoh's order concerning Hebrew baby boys?
    Ans.: Throw them in the river.
 

16. Thought question: Why did they refer to the Israelite women as Hebrew women (vs. 16)?
    Ans.: The name Hebrew was first given to Abraham because he was the son of Eber. The Israelites being descendants of Abraham are therefore Hebrews also.
