Thought Questions:
A. Why do you think that Esau felt differently than he had 20 years before when Jacob left? I think time can heal a lot of things. He had moved on and been successful in spite of his mistakes. I also think that God intervened to bring Jacob back to this place. It gave Isaac some peace as well to see his son again.
B. How did Shechem’s actions and words not match? How could he take her and violate her and then claim to love her?
This is something that we always need to watch. We must match actions with words. By our fruits we will be judged.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them." Mt. 7:15-20
Shechem was definitely a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
