The Woman’s Role Is From God

By Sandy Ditoro

The Woman’s Role

From the Beginning

To the woman He said:  “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” (Gen.3:16)

The Virtuous Wife

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax  And willingly works with her hands.

She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants.

She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night.

She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet.

She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.  She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies sashes for the merchants.

Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:
“ Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates. (Taken from Proverbs 31)

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine:  that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—  that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,  to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. (Taken from Titus 2)

A woman will be saved in childbearing.  This does not mean the physical act of giving birth.  It means the process of training and teaching her children.  If her salvation is connected to how she does this job, then she must be very, very dedicated and devoted to this task! (This verse does not apply to those who women who are not mothers.)

Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. (1 Timothy 2:15)

A Christian Woman is active in many good works. This is a big part of her role, especially after her children are grown.  We are created in Christ Jesus for good works. (Ephesians 2:10)  Notice the emphasis that is put on good works in this passage:

Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.   (1Timothy 5:9-10)

Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully.  For some have already turned aside after Satan.  If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows. (1 Timothy 5:14-16)

Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.  And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.. (1 Timothy 2:11-12)

The roles of elder and deacon in the church are filled by godly men. It is God’s plan that they be supported and encouraged  by godly wives.  This is a very important responsibility for a woman to fill.  She should set a godly example in all things and be very hospitable.

Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. (1 Timothy 3:11)

From the Holy Scripture we see that there are a number of important commitments a woman must fulfill in order to be well pleasing to God.  On the Day of Judgment, she will give answer as to how she fulfilled each one.  God will not be impressed by the excuse that we had other things more important to do.  It is so important that we prayerfully read and meditate on the instructions God has given us which pertain to the Woman’s Role.  We should be very dedicated to  God  in our given role and not serve in it as though it were a part time job.
