The Greatest Among You II - Syllabus
The Authority of the Scriptures
Lesson 2
Have you ever wondered why there are so many standards of morality in the world? So many different religions? So much division, even in the Lord’s church?
There is one reason. They do not all accept the same authority or rule to go by. God’s standard for the Christian, the only standard He recognizes, is His Word, the New Testament. If we are to be true Christians we must accept the authority of the scriptures as our only guide, the only source of truth.
If We Do This We Will All Speak The Same Things
1. Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be ___ __________ among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (1 Cor.1:10)
THE STANDARD FOR A FOOT
In our everyday lives, we all have certain standards in common. For example, we have all measured things in inches and feet. Because we have a standardized system, I know that if you measure an object to be one foot long, then it's twelve inches.
The foot was originally based on the length of a human foot. Imagine that! That's no standard at all. I suspect that lumber retailers and housebuilders with the longest feet did the best business.
There's a point about religion you need to consider here. Judges 17:6 of the Bible says, "Every man did that which was right in his own eyes." You see? No standard to follow. I suggest that today we have a standard for worship, for integrity, for family and for life. It's the Bible, and it's God's Word. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God might be complete, thoroughly furnished unto every good work." (adapted from an article written by Glenn Colley)

The Word of God is like a road map. If we follow it carefully, we will not get lost. If we are on the right road, we will reach Heaven:
Lessons Learned From A Road Map
* It cannot assist until it is consulted.
* It will not help those who ignore what it says.
* It is composed by those who know its subject.
* It can be misread.
* It will yield the same directions for anyone who picks it up and properly uses it.
* It completely allows for the free will of the user.
* It is meant to be practical rather than abstract.
* It has helped many successfully reach their final destination.
* It is not meant to predict unexpected occurrences for the traveler while it is in use.
*It shows borders, boundaries, and what is both possible and impossible in travel.
Humanly made road maps, however, can become outdated, fail to reflect changes and problems, often show diverse routes to a single destination, and can contain incorrect data. Yet, in the ten ways listed above, it is much like Heaven's road map, the Bible, God’s Holy Scriptures. (cf. Ps. 119:105; Prov. 6:20-22; 12:28; 15:19; Jn. 14:6; 16:13; etc.). (Written by Neal Pollard)

Have you ever heard the statement concerning all the different religions: We are all traveling different roads, but they all lead to the same place? This statement is not true. The New Testament Scriptures are only one Way (Roadmap) to Heaven.
2. Enter by the ________ gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. (Matthew 7:13)
3. Because narrow is the gate and ________ is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. (Matthew 7:14)
The Book of Mormon, The Baptist Manual, The Methodist Discipline, The Presbyterian Confession of Faith, The Thirty Nine Articles of Faith, The Augsburg Confession and in general, any denominational catechism do not have authority or power from God to save your soul. These Creeds and doctrines, may contain parts of the Word of God. Anything that is not the whole Word of God without anything added or subtracted is man made, rendered impotent to save.
4. Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who ______ ___ the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. (2 John 9:9)
5. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, ___ ____ receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. (2 John 9:10-11)
6. For the word of God is ______ _____ ________ , and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Heb.4:12)
The Gospel is the Power of God to Salvation
7. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the _______ of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Rom.1:16
8. Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the _________ _______ , which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)

Below is a list of commandments. Please use the scripture to prove whether it is a commandment of God or a commandment of men.
NOTE: Some students aren’t as experienced with the computer as others are. Below is a step by step guideline for using Bible Gateway. If you are an experienced Bible Gateway user (or other Bible resource user) then you will want to skip down to the next black words.
(Gateway hint: Beside each commandment a keyword (k) and “search from” (sf) will be given. Just type in Gateway Bible in your Web Search box (click “go”) and then click on the top entry. Click on Keyword Search. Type in your Keyword or phrase where it says: Enter word or phrase. Scroll down. Select version. Scroll down. See Options. Find “search from”. Click on the small round circle. Now you can limit the books where your search will be taken from. For instance, if you know that the verse you want is in Acts, you can put Acts in both boxes and you will only get verses that contain your search word that are in Acts and not from the whole Bible.
52. Pray to God through Mary. (sf) John (k) ask in my name
53. Listen to the chorus sing praises to God. (sf) Ephesians (k) singing and melody
54. Preach the Word. (sf) 2 Timothy (k) preach the word
55. Confess your sins to an earthly priest. (sf) James – 1 John (k) confess sins
56. Partake of the Lord’s supper every Sunday. (sf) Acts (k) first day of the week
57. Do not forsake assembling together with the church. (sf) Hebrews (k)(assembling)
If you have no idea what book in the NT something is found, just put Matthew and Revelation in the box. We will do the next one this way:
58. A bishop should be the husband of one wife. (sf) Matthew- Revelation (k) one wife
Now try the last ones on your own:
59. Teach the young women to be keepers at home.
60. Children obey parents.
61. Pray a lot.
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:25)
