CHRONOLOGICAL SURVEY OF BIBLE WOMEN
COURSE REQUIREMENTS/SYLLABUS
As you proceed through this course, you will be given directions that are easy to follow. At each step you will be told exactly what to do next—what materials to study, what written work or activities to do, when to take a test, and what written work to submit.
REQUIREMENTS:
This course is generally arranged by lessons centered on one lady at a time. In order to finish the course in the allotted time it will be necessary to follow the schedule quite closely. There may be a few additional reading assignments, which must be completed each week.
TIME NEEDED:
IN THE BEGINNING, IT IS ASSUMED THAT YOU WILL SPEND APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS EACH WEEK ON THIS COURSE for a period of 8 weeks. You may do the work much faster as time goes on. When completing written assignments, be sure to use your own words to explain your thoughts. I need to know what you know.
HOW TO GET HELP FROM YOUR TEACHER:
Feel free to write me for help. I will be in touch with you often by e-mail, and
expect you to reply to these messages. I may send corrections or additions to the assignments
or simply give you additional information relating to the work that you have to do. If I cannot
reach you or get you to respond, you will miss some important information for the course.
My email address is online-bs@chennaitts.org.
MATERIALS:
v There is nothing to buy or find at the library. Your textbook with weekly lessons is here:
http://www.stgcoc.com/syllabus_a_sustematic_study_of_bible_womrn.htm
For those of you who like to have a hard copy of materials in your hand, I suggest that you keep your lessons in the following way:
v Hard cover 3-ring binder with at least a 1” spine for keeping copies of each lesson.
v Or perhaps a soft-cover folder with brads for easy insertion/removal of papers.
PROCEEDING THROUGH THE COURSE
In every lesson there will be easy directions. There will be two types of questions for this course. Short answer questions and long answer questions which must be proved from scripture.
By the time you have finished all the lessons, you should be ready to take a final test. You may use your Bible and any notes (saved in a folder on your computer or as hard copies in a bound folder) to take an open book test. The only request I make is that you not ask outside help from anyone.
This course is a chronological survey of women of the Bible. That just means the women studied will pretty much start in Genesis and go through Revelation; however we will keep in mind that some books in the Bible are repeating the historical record. Because this is an introductory class designed to give you a good overview of major women in Hebrew history, we will cover most of them in their historical context.
Please print a copy of the chart (http://www.stgcoc.com/periods_of_old_testament_history.htm) for a better understanding of where these ladies fit into history. The reading schedule is not demanding at all, and once you have become accustomed to the formula for reading, know how to find the answers, and what questions to ask, you will find that your reading speed picks up quite a bit.
You should begin reading each selection as early in the week as possible. Whenever appropriate, use the WWW sites which I may suggest now and then, primarily as references. There may be specific questions about these selections, and you should find them helpful for coming to a better understanding of Bible women and in preparing for your written work. Please try to send your answers to the questions by Wednesday if possible and your comments to what you have studied by Thursday, so that I will have time to organize all emails and send them back to you by Saturday each week.
By Thursday, you will write a personal response and participate in on-line "discussions" by Saturday. This has several advantages, the main one being that you can participate in “class discussions” even though we are not physically together with a group. Because I am half way around the world sleeping when you are awake and awake when you are sleeping, and because few women have the same schedules even if they live in the same city, we will not use the IM option for live discussions. All our discussions will be email messages only.
POINT SYSTEM:
Credit will be based on the number of points gained from the accumulated answer papers from weekly assignments and responses to other student’s questions/comments, using the following scale:
v *Answering questions for each lesson: 4 points each lesson for a total of 32 points
v Comments/Responses about things you have learned, appreciated, or disagreed with in each lesson: 2 points each lesson for a total of 16 points
v Response to other student’s comments: 2 points each lesson for a total of 16 points
v Long paper (topic of choice—five to seven paragraphs long): 36 points maximum (This paper will be explained in more detail as the course develops.)
v Total: 100 points maximum
The final grade will be based on the number of points accumulated:
