In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Paul lists 10 grievous sins. After listing those sins, Paul says in verse 11:
"And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God."
Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, took upon Himself the ugliness of the sins listed in verses 9 and 10:
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Paul states, “You were washed” (1 Corinthians 6:11). Washing occurs when a person is baptized into Christ:
"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Gal. 3:27)
We were raised to "walk in newness of life." (Rom. 6:4) We were sanctified (set apart with and for God) from iniquity. Paul told Timothy:
"If anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work." (2 Timothy 2:21)
We were justified (made just by acquittal from sin). Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 53:11:
"By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities."
Paul tells the Galatians that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God, but the "just shall live by faith" (Galatians 3:11).
In Romans 5:1 we read:
"Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ."
John wrote in 1 John 1:9:
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Christians are a blessed people. Being washed, sanctified, and justified doesn’t mean that we can do anything we want. It is very easy to fall into the traps and temptations that Satan puts in front of us. It is very easy to harbor idols in our hearts. We must be on constant guard using the Sword of the Spirit and make certain that we have the whole armor of God on to help resist the "Evil One". (Ephesians 6:11, 17)
We must contend earnestly for the faith. Jude 20-21 states:
" But you beloved, building upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life."
