Sermon on the Mount – II

SM – II

 Douglas Young

Class Overview

Over the course of this term, you will continue to consider the teachings of Jesus that we call The Sermon on the Mount. The focus of the second term will be the text of Matthew 5:13-48. I divide this section of text into two parts. The first part is The Christian’s Influence in God’s Heavenly Kingdom (Matt. 5:13-16). The second is The Transcendence of God’s Heavenly Kingdom over Judaism’s Various Laws, Traditions and Applications (Matt. 5:17-48).

Part of the purpose of this study is to make it personal, through practical application, not merely an academic exercise. You will be asked to think, as well as convey how you can better incorporate Christ’s teachings into your personal life. The lessons are,

Lesson 1 –The Christian Sphere of Influence (5:13-16)     September 8

Lesson 2 - The Fulfillment of the Law (5:17-20)               September 15

Lesson 3 – Anger (5:21-26)                                                    September 22

Lesson 4 - Temperance (5:27-30)                                         September 29

Lesson 5 – Divorce (5:31-32)                                                  October 6

Lesson 6 – Honesty and Integrity (5:33-37)                         October 13

Lesson 7 – Vengeance (5:38-42)                                            October 20

Lesson 8 - Concern for Equality (5:43-38)                            October 27

Your work should be completed by the lesson deadline. Please cut and paste each lesson into an email. Include the lesson number in the subject portion of the email. Answer the questions to the best of your ability, framing your answers in complete sentences. Type your answers in italicized format, so as to clearly distinguish your answers from the questions. Send your lessons to douglasryoung@mac.com. Before working on Lesson 2, please consider the Introduction to the class that I have supplied as well.
