Lesson 5
Blessed
are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew
5:7
Mercy is integral to God’s redemptive plan. We
are expected to be merciful, for God has been merciful to us (Titus 3:5). On a
practical level, grace has been described as God giving us what we don’t
deserve. Mercy, though, is God withholding from us what we do deserve.
- What
does it mean to be merciful? Consider the two components of the word, merci/ful.
- What
is God’s mercy contingent upon? Consider also Matthew 6:14-15.
- Why
should Christians want to be merciful? Consider Matthew 5:48
- What
does mercy say about the person who bestows it? Hint: Reflect upon how mercy
might relate to meekness (strength under control).
- How
has God been merciful to you? How can you show mercy to others?
