Lesson 5

 

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7

 

Mercy is integral to God’s redemptive plan. We are expected to be merciful, for God has been merciful to us (Titus 3:5). On a practical level, grace has been described as God giving us what we don’t deserve. Mercy, though, is God withholding from us what we do deserve.

 

 

  1. What does it mean to be merciful? Consider the two components of the word, merci/ful.

 

 

  1. What is God’s mercy contingent upon? Consider also Matthew 6:14-15.

 

 

  1. Why should Christians want to be merciful? Consider Matthew 5:48

 

 

  1. What does mercy say about the person who bestows it? Hint: Reflect upon how mercy might relate to meekness (strength under control).

 

 

  1. How has God been merciful to you? How can you show mercy to others?
