The
Sermon on the Mount
Lesson 4
Blessed
are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be
filled. Matthew 5:6
Hunger and thirst are two of the strongest
physiological desires humans can possess. Here they are used to represent
spiritual appetites. Physically speaking, a person’s hunger and/or thirst can
only be assuaged by food and water. While God provides for our earthly needs,
earthly needs do not fulfill our deepest spiritual desires. Spiritually
speaking, the fulfillment or the satiation of those desires comes by way of
something else.
