Situation Ethics
Regaina Thompson

Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases!  For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.

They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things,

Who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail; our lips are our own; Who is lord over us?"

The Words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

You shall keep them, O LORD, you shall preserve them from this generation forever.  (Psalm 12: 1-4,6-7)

Who in this world can I trust?  So many things in the Psalms could have been written today. Lying, flattering lips, and a double heart are the norm for many people today.  They worship the God of self.

I was just reading some statistics that said most teens today believe there is no "moral absolute truth."

Such young people are guided by:
  • "Do what feels good."
  •  "Do what is right for you."
  • "You have to look out for yourself."
Such an attitude is motivated by pride and puts self above God.  A lot of public schools are teaching the idea of situational ethics.  The Bible does not teach that our values change with the situation.

Proverbs 6:19 says that lying is one of the things God hates.  Lying  is an abomination to Him!  In Rev 21:8 we are told that ALL liars will be in the lake of fire.  This verse says nothing about the situation.  When my father read this verse, he always emphasized,  "ALL liars".  There is no such thing as a white lie.

We must live in this world and be a light in it, but we must be very careful who we trust.

Total honesty is a foreign concept in this world.

Living by total honesty is a way to show Christ to a dark world.
