The
virtuous woman willingly worked with her
hands. The Hebrew word for "willingly" is "chepets"
which means "with pleasure and
desire". This entire passage speaks of the virtuous woman doing something
for her family. Her light does not go
out by night and she rises early in the morning. She
does not eat the bread of idleness (Proverbs
31:27).
Have
you ever been around someone who worked all the time and kept themselves very
busy? It is very difficult to remain idle when you see them working so
diligently. It is sort-of contagious! Paul admonishes the young widows to
remarry and rear children and guide her home so that they would not become
idle and begin gossiping (1
Timothy 5).
As
we strive to be keepers at home it is very important to note the attitude
depicted for us. We must serve our family with pleasure and desire. Our hard
work is in vain if we do not do it willingly from a loving heart.
Proverbs
31:15 states that she gave a portion to her
maidservants. Again looking up the Hebrew context of this word, it would
translate that she gave tasks to the young women. Perhaps, she was organizing
the day's work of slaves or hired personnel in her home. Or, perhaps, she was
training her young daughters to be keepers at home as instructed in
Titus
2. The virtuous woman was busy guarding her family from
the sins associated with idle living!
