Set Apart

By Aneta Dodd

How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood?  (Psalm 4:2)

As I look throughout our culture today, I could ask these questions! Our entertainment industry is full of worthlessness and our society is seeking false gods and false teachings to feel good about themselves or to fulfill a void in their lives.

As Christians, we can also get caught up in this worldly view of existence. Many times I have been full speed with the world only to study God’s Word and see that His plan for our life is completely in the opposite direction!

I mentioned entertainment because we are a culture that loves to be entertained. As we try to raise our children, we will need to teach them to discern good from bad, godly from the ungodly, profitable from the worthlessness. How do we begin to teach our children?

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

God’s Word should be our authority on all things. The following verse is on which I have found to be very helpful in discerning entertainment:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

I encourage you to hold up the television programs, radio stations, books, play stations, and other like activities to God’s Word. Is it shameful and worthless or is it pure and lovely and of good report?

David completes his thought in Psalms 4:3 “But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him.”
