Reverence God in Acceptable Worship
By Sharon Tomlinson
"And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord; thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. For who in heaven can be compared unto the Lord? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him." (Ps 89:5-7)Today there are hundreds or thousands of denominations who claim to be worshipping God. The fact is that they worship God in vain. Men, in their "wisdom", have tried to make worship more inviting and entertaining to the world so they can draw large numbers into their man-made "churches".
Let's consider the mind of God and His command to us concerning our worship to Him.
As we see from the passage in Psalms, God is to be greatly feared in the assembly. We are to maintain our focus, fear and draw near to God.
How do we worship in accordance to God's plan?
We are to speak in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, making melody in our hearts (not on instruments of music). We must not only say the words to the songs but we must "make melody in our hearts". We must do both to be acceptable to God.
The focal point of our worship is the Lord’s Supper. It was instituted by God. It is holy. I Cor 11:24-27The Lord commanded his disciples to remember His death each time we eat of the bread and drink of the cup. We are to do this each Lord's Day when we assemble with the saints. We are not to be distracted (not discerning his body), which will cause us to eat and drink damnation to our souls.
We are to glorify God and to offer acceptable sacrifice unto Him. We are to give as we have been prospered by God.
We are to approach God in prayer and to draw near to Him. In our hearts we commune with Him.
When we pray, we are approaching God's throne and we do so through the authority of Christ. There is no other way to God but through Christ. We offer our prayers in Christ's name or by his authority. He presents our prayers to our Father.
In our assemblies our teachers should speak the oracles of God.
I Peter 4:11 "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen"Ec 12:13 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
