The Perfume Scented Wardrobe

By Elizabeth Peak

"A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companions. All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad." (Psalm 45:7-8)

The "oil of gladness" that is mentioned in this Psalm could possibly be the same as the anointing oil that God directed Moses to make in  Exodus 30:22-33. This was composed of myrrh, cassia, cinnamon, fragrant cane and olive oil. These ingredients were to be put together by a perfumer. The mixture would become the holy anointing oil for anointing items to be used in the tent of meeting and for anointing the priests. This oil was not to be made up for common use.

The above verses are speaking of our Lord. He is our High Priest. His robes are scented with myrrh, aloes, and cassia from the "oil of gladness." We know from a study of the scriptures that He loves righteousness and hates wickedness.

In  Matthew 26:6-13, we read of a woman who poured a vial of costly perfume on Jesus head as he reclined at the table in Simon’s house. His disciples were indignant when they saw this. They thought it a waste. Jesus told them the woman had done a good deed. He said: "For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial."

The ingredients mentioned in this Psalm were also used for embalming.

Nicodemus used these ingredients when he embalmed our Lord after His crucifixion. (John 19:39-40)

Paul writes "Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.  For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.  To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?" (2 Corinthians 2:14-16)

The perfumed scented wardrobe is composed of "whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellence, and worthy of praise." (Philippians 4:8) The following attributes are also part of the perfumed wardrobe: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness. (Colossians 3:12-13)

The perfumed scented wardrobe will be ours when we become children of God through baptism for the remission of sins, obeying His commandments, and doing His will.
