Peace Lesson 4

A Harmonious Relationship A Harmonious Relationship

When we look in a Vines Expository Dictionary Of New Testament Words, for the word "peace" (EIRENE in the Greek), we find that it describes:

17. For to be ________ minded is death, but to be __________ minded is life and peace. (Rom. 8:6)

Since the word peace (EIRENE), means all of these things, does that mean that if we have the fruit of the Spirit, "peace", we will always have harmonious relationships between other people, our nation will always be at peace, that we will always be free from molestation, that we will have a harmonious relationship with God and feel a sense of rest and contentment as a consequence thereof?

Did Christ Come To Bring Peace?

We know that we cannot always be at peace with God and be at peace with man at the same time. Consider what Jesus said:

18. Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a _______. For I have come to set a man against his _________, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;………… (Matt.10:34-35)

19. And "a man's ________ will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not _______ of Me. (Matt.10:36-37)

20. And he who does not take his cross and __________ after Me is not worthy of Me. (Matt.10:38)

21. He who finds his life will _____ it, and he who loses his life for My sake will _____ it. (Matt. 10:39)

Sometimes obeying God makes people not like us and we are not at peace with them. Therefore will not be free of molestation. Consider what the Apostle Paul and all the other Apostles suffered simply because they taught the gospel.

Peace Through The Gospel

The peace, then, that is the fruit of the Spirit, is the peace that comes from being in a harmonious relationship with God. We obtain this peace when we obey the gospel. Obedience to the gospel puts us in a reconciled relationship with God, whereas when we were in our sins, we were God’’s enemies.

22. And you, who once were________ and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and _________, and above reproach in His sight- if indeed you continue in the faith, ___________ and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard. (Col.1:21-23)

23. But He was wounded for our ___________, He was bruised for our _______________; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. (Is.53:5)

I Declare To You The Gospel

In 1 Cor.15:1-4 we learn more about this gospel that saves us, that reconciles us to God:

24. Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you ________ and in which you stand,…………(1 Cor.15:1)

25. by which also you are saved, if you hold ______ that word which I preached to you - unless you believed in _____. (1 Cor.15:2)

26. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also ___________: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the _____________. (1 Cor.15:3-4)

God Will Take Vengeance on Those Who do not "obey the gospel"

27. And to give you who are ___________ rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not _____ God, and on those who do not ______ the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thess.1:7-8)

How Does One Obey The Gospel?

The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ are the facts of the gospel. But how does one obey facts? We learn in Romans 6:17 that we can do as the Romans did and "obey that form of doctrine" ("form" means something that represents something else)

28. But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you _____ from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became ________ of righteousness. (Romans 6:17-18)

What is That Form of Doctrine?

29. Or do you not know that as many of us as were _________ into Christ Jesus were _________ into His death? (Romans 6:3)

30. Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the _______, even so we also should walk in ____________ of life. (Romans 6:4)

31. For if we have been united together in the ________ of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His ______________. (Romans 6:5)

\Baptism is that form of doctrine, which represents his death, burial, and resurrection. When we are baptized, we obey that form of doctrine. We obey the gospel.

The Ministry Of Reconciliation

We are reconciled to God in baptism. At baptism, our peace with God begins. At baptism, we are given the "ministry of reconciliation" which the Apostles received from Christ. They passed it on to us:

32. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new ___________; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become ____. (2 Cor.5:17)………….

33. Now all things are of God, who has __________ us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ___________ of reconciliation (2 Cor.5:18)………….

34. That is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to __________, not imputing their _____________ to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. (2 Cor.5:19)………….

35. Now then, we are _____________ for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's ________, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the ______________ of God in Him. (2 Cor. 5:20-21)

This means that the peace which we receive, we now are commissioned by God to give to others.

36. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All _______ has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, _______ them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt.28:18-19)

37. Teaching them to ________ all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you ______, even to the end of the age." Amen (Matt. 28:20).

We Are God’s Ambassadors For Christ And For Peace

38. Blessed are the ________________, For they shall be called sons of God. (Matt.5:9)

Let’s Review:

39. Through whom does our peace come? (Acts 10:35-36, Col.1:20)

40. Will we always be at peace with everyone when we are at peace with God? (Matt. 10:34-39)

41. Can we ever be at peace with God and at peace with the (sinful) world at the same time? (James 4:4)

42. What does "the chastisement of our peace was on Him" mean? (Is.53:5)

43. What does the statement that "we were reconciled to God" mean? (Rom.5:10)

44. What are the 3 facts of the gospel stated in I Cor. 15:1-4?

45. How does one obey the gospel? (Rom.6:17-18, Rom.6:3-6)

46. Tell how baptism is the "form" of doctrine that saves us, or in other words, show how baptism represents the death, burial and resurrection of Christ: Rom.6:17-18, Rom.6:3-647. What is the "ministry of reconciliation" which is committed to Christians, II Cor.5:18-19?

48. What does "propitiation" mean?

49. What does the fact that Christ is the "propitiation" for our sins, have to do with our "peace" with God? I John 2:2, I John 4:10, Rom.3:23-26

He Restoreth My Soul

I think that when you read Psalm 23, that even it will have new meaning to you, when you think of reconciliation, propitiation, and peace.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all. (2 Thess. 3:16)
