Partaking of the Divine Nature

 Lesson 6 – Patience

 Theme:  To show the importance of patience in being like God.

 INTRODUCTION:

            A.        Partaking of the divine nature is a must for those who want to live                           eternally with God.

1.         God has provided everything – II Peter 1:3,4 – 3)”According as his divine power hath ______ unto us ____ _______ that ________

hath called us to glory and virtue  4)Whereby are ______ unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be

2.                  We must strive diligently to be like Him – II Peter 1:5 – “And beside this, giving _____ __________, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.”

B.                 Examining the Greek words:

1.                  “Markrothumeo” – used 33 times in the New Testament – as meaning “patience”

a.                  Strong’s – Patient; bear (suffer) long; be long-suffering; have patience; patiently endure; fortitude

b.                  Lexicon – To be slow towards; be long-suffering; clement; indulgetnt; to forbear; to have patience

c.                   Using Bible Gateway or Strong’s please find and  list the 33 times that “patience” is used in the New Testament:  

2.                  “Makpothumos” – an adverb, used 4 times in the New Testament most often translated “patiently”

a.                  Strong’s – with long (enduring) temper; leniently; patiently

b.                  Lexicon – patiently; with indulgence

c.                   Find the 4 times “patiently is used and give them here:

3.                  “hupomeno and “hupomeneite – imply a passive endurance; and is used in the future tense – I Peter 2:20 – “For what glory is it, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it __________? But if, when ye take it ___________, this is acceptable with God.”

Literally meaning “if you shall take it patiently”

4.                  “Epieikes” – used 8 times in the New Testament and applies           

attitudes

a.                  Strong’s – appropriate; mild; gentle; moderation; patient

b.                  Lexicon – suitable; flair; reasonable; gentle; mild; patient

c.                   Again look up and list the 8 times the word “patient” is used in the New Testament:

 

I.                    Patience Is a Must – II Peter 1:5,6 - told to add patience to our lives

A.                Hebrews 10:36 – “For ye have need of _________, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

1.         A means of proving ourselves – II Corinthians 6:4

But in ____ _________ approving ourselves as the ministers                        of God, in much _________, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses”

2.                  Gives us strength – Colossians 1:11 – “____________ with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all _________ and longsuffering with joyfulness.”

3.                  Is a command – I Thessalonians 5:14 – “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be _________ toward all men.”

B.                 Patience to endure – Hebrews 6:15 – “And so, after he had __________ endured, he obtained the promise.”

II.                 Obtaining Patience

A.                Through tribulation and experience – Romans 5:3,4 –  3)”And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh __________  4)And _________, experience; and experience, hope.”

B.                 Through the trying of our faith – James 1:3  - “Knowing this, that the trying of your _______ worketh __________.”
