OBC ATT 7                       ATTITUDES OF THE HEART                    NOV / DEC 2007

LESSON SEVEN

Attitudes: Deceitfulness and An Obedient Spirit

Deceitfulness is deliberately misleading, causing belief of something false.   A deceitful attitude is dishonest to self and to others.   One cannot possess both a deceitful attitude and an obedient spirit.  As we look at the scriptures included in this lesson, we realize only an obedient spirit will be pleasing to God.

1. Jeremiah 17:9, "The ______ is __________ above ___ things, And desperately _________; Who can _____ it?"

This is the heart of the carnal man or woman.  The spiritual man or woman must not have a deceitful heart; instead, one who is spiritual must an obedient heart / spirit.  The obedient spirit will be studied more later in this lesson.

Psalm 32:2,    "_____________ is the man to whom the _____ does ____ impute iniquity, And in whose _____ there is ___ _____."

2. God’s word reminds us the Lord abhors (detests, hates) the deceitful.

Psalm 5:6,    "You shall _________ those who speak ____________; The _____  _______ the bloodthirsty and _________ man."

3. Proverbs 17:20,  "He who has a ____________ _______ finds ___ _____, And he who has a _________ tongue falls into _____."

4. What does Hebrews 3:12-13 say about sin?

5. In Jeremiah 23:26-27, what was said about these prophets who prophesied lies?

6. What specific warnings are given concerning deceit in Colossians 2:8 ?

Does this ever happen today?        Explain your answer.

7. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15,    "For such are ______ apostles, __________   _________,  _______________ themselves into apostles of ________. And no wonder! For _____ himself _____________  ________ into an angel of ______. Therefore it is no great thing if ___  ___________ also ______________ themselves into ___________ of ________________, whose ___ will be according to their ______ ."

8. Christians must realize we must not have a deceitful heart.

1 Peter 2:1-2 gives a command concerning the growth that must occur, even for the new Christian.

We must lay aside:

We must desire:

9. More commands are given Christians concerning things to put off and to put on.

Ephesians 4:21-24,   "if indeed you have heard ____ and have been ________ by ____, as the _____ is in Jesus: that you ___ ___, concerning your ______ ________, the ___ man which grows _______ according to the ____________   ______, and be ___________ in the _____ of _____   _____,  and that

you ___  ___ the ___ man which was created ____________ to ____, in true ________________ and ___________."

10. Even as Christians, it is possible to deceive ourselves.   From James 1:22-26, list ways we may deceive our own hearts.

Read again Mark 7:21-23 from last week’s lesson.   This scripture includes deceit as one of the evil things from within the heart that will defile us.

The Obedient Spirit / The Obedient Attitude:

An obedient spirit is the most important attitude we shall discuss.   Without this attitude, we can never hope to be pleasing to God.   Obedience is required by God, but that does not take away choice.   Each person makes the choice of an obedient spirit / attitude or a disobedient spirit / attitude.   That choice is not a "one-time decision," but is a choice made over and over and over during a lifetime.   Even after one chooses to obey the gospel and become a Christian, he / she must continue to choose obedience to God’s command.

11. Salvation is a gift from God and is available to all people.

Titus 2:11,   "For the _______ of ____ that _______ __________ has ________________ to ___ men,"

However, not all people will be saved.   Each person must choose.

Matthew 7:13-14,   " _____ by the ________ ____;  for _____ is the _____ and _______ is the ___ that _____ to ____________,  and there are _______ who ____   ____   ____   ____.  Because __________ is the ____ and ___________ is the ___ which ______   __  ____, and _______  ____   ____ who ____ __."

To choose the narrow gate which leads to life, we must choose to obey the commands of God and meet His conditions.

12. We must hear or read or in some way be taught, before we will know about God and His Son Jesus Christ. (Please type the verses listed in this question.)

Romans 10:17,

We must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and died to pay the price for our sins.

John 20:30-31,

We must repent of sins.

Acts 17:30-31,

We must confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

Acts 8:35-38,

We must be baptized (immersed) in water in order to wash away our sins and put on Christ.

Acts 22:16,

Galatians 3:27,

The verses listed in question 12 teach us what must be done in order to become a Christian.  There are other verses that could be included for each of these areas.   If you wish to also include verses not mentioned, please do so.  (Don’t forget to use a color other than black if you add verses, and please list the verses in the area they support in question 12.)

13. A new Christian is likened to a baby, in the sense of needing to grow.

1 Peter 2:2-3,

List things that will help a Christian to grow.

Should a Christian ever cease to grow?

14. To truly possess an obedient spirit, we must also grow a loving spirit / attitude.

Mark 12:30-31,   "And you shall ____ the _____ your ____ with ___ your ______, with ___ your ____, with ___ your ____, and with _____ your ________. This is the _____ _____________.   And the ________, like it, is this: You shall ____ your _____________ as ____________.   There is no other commandment ___________ than these."

15. This loving spirit will become a part of the obedient spirit.

Think of the words spoken by Jesus in John 14:15, "If you love Me, keep My commandments."

1 John 5:3,  "For this is the ____ of ____, that we ____ ___ _______________. And ___ _______________ are ___ ________________."

16. God requires obedience to His word, not only to become a Christian, but also to remain in a saved condition.

We are told in Revelation 2:10, "...Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." To be faithful is to keep on obeying God’s commands.

In Hebrews 5:8-9, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became the author of eternal salvation to whom?

17. Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:21 give us a very important warning about an obedient spirit.

Matthew 7:21,   "____  ___________ who ____ to Me, '_____, _____,' shall _____ the __________ of _________,  ___ he who ____ the ____ of __   _________ in heaven."

18. There is no way we could study all possible attitudes during the time of our study in this session. Please discuss an attitude not included in these lessons. Share scriptures to explain why this attitude is or is not pleasing to God. You may make this as brief or as detailed as you wish.
