NTS-Syllabus                                                    NTS-I (Lesson 3)

New Testament Survey Class Three:

Third Class: Overview of the book of Acts – Date due January 20th, this class will place emphasis upon the church/kingdom being built, established, and thoroughly furnished. (This class will emphasize the words of Christ being put into “action.” Passages in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John will (should) be demonstrated in this study as being fulfilled. Further, conversion will be addressed in this study, i.e., how to become a Christian or member of Christ’s church [cf., Acts 11:26 ]. Baptism for the remission of sins, as it was commanded to be taught and applied in the great commission, will be addressed in this study [ 2:38 ; 22:16 ]. The result of all of this; the church is established; the church is instructed by the “apostle’s doctrine”—which is the Lord’s doctrine; and the church is fortified and organized as God designed it [i.e., 14:23 ; 20:17 -32 et al.].)

1.) Let’s start at the back of this book: What does the book of Acts demonstrate in Acts 28:1-28? Key: Read this chapter and briefly, as concisely as you can, give me a synopsis. I don’t expect a “book” with this answer. If your answers are major points, that will be fine, but demonstrate your understanding of this text.

Answer:

2.) Look at Mark 16:17-20. Is there anything peculiar in Acts 28 that the Lord said would happen, that does happen, and demonstrates the word or apostleship of one being confirmed? Key: Miracles served a purpose in the first century, and these miraculous events are set to confirm the word of God. Compare the text and consider the harmony of both. This should not be a difficult answer and one example would suffice. It has something to do with an animal that slithers. J

Answer:

3.) What is the final destination of the apostle in Acts 28? Key: Acts 1:8 said the gospel would be preached unto the uttermost part of the world. This location in Acts 28 demonstrates Acts 1:8 being fulfilled in the context of this book. Also, the location, geographically speaking, was considered the uttermost part of the world during the first century.

Answer:

4.) Is there any similarity between Luke 1:1-4 and Acts 1:1-14? Would you suppose the same author of the book of Luke is the same author of the book of Acts? Key: There is only one Gentile author in the New Testament.

Answer:

5.) What was the primary message Jesus was preaching during His ministry? Key: Compare these passages to gather your answer. Your answer should be one, though I understand this one primary message is comprehensive, I only desire what the comprehensive message’s topic was. [cf., Matthew 4:17; 5:18-20; 6:33-34; 10:7; 16:18-19, 28; Mark 1:14; 9:1; Luke 4:15, 18-21 (cf., Isaiah 2:1-5; 61:1-2; Daniel 2:44) 17:20-21; John 3:3, 5; 18:33-36; Acts 1:3]

Answer:

6.) Did you read all of the passages given in question number five?

Answer:

7.) What did Jesus say He would build in Matthew 16:18?

Answer:

8.) Would it be safe to think that the kingdom of God and the church comprise the same people? Key: Acts 2:41-47; the King James Version of the Bible is your best translation in order to answer this question.

Answer:

9.) Is Jesus the King of the Kingdom reigning now from heaven? Key: Acts 2:29 -36; also cf., 2 Samuel 7:12-14; Luke 1:31-33

Answer:

10.) Is the Kingdom of this world (the earth) or is it from heaven with Christ ruling and reigning now? Key: John 18:36; Acts 2:29 -36; 8:5, 12; 13:22 -37; 28:31

 Answer:

11.) The book of Acts demonstrates the fulfillment of the Old Testament Scriptures and the ministries of both John the baptizer and Jesus, which are likewise contained in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John: True or False? Key: Luke 24:44; Acts 3:19 -26; 13:24 -37 [The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are a part of the New Testament.]

Answer:

12.) The book of Acts demonstrates the fulfillment of the Great Commission’s accounts in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the first century: True or False? Key: Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:44ff; John 21:17 -19

Answer:

13.) The book of Acts is the book of “Action” or “Application” of the gospel of Jesus Christ: True or False?

 Answer:

14.) The book of Acts is an inspired chronicle or history of the church and kingdom of God being established: True or False? Key: Matthew 16:18-19, 28; Acts 2:41-47

 Answer:

15.) Were the keys of the kingdom given on the day of Pentecost of Acts 2? Key: The Lord promised to give unto Peter and the apostles the keys of the kingdom. Keys are tools that open, unlock, and lock doors typically speaking. Obviously, the Lord was using the term “key” figuratively in reference to the kingdom of God or the church. Would you say that the keys of the kingdom were given to the apostles in the book of Acts—all of them? The passages you have read from the previous questions should without any doubt be able to answer this question.

Answer:

16.) How did those in the book of Acts become members of Christ’s church? Key: Acts 2:41 -47

Answer:

17.) What did Jesus teach in these passages pertaining to salvation? Key: Matthew 10:32-33; 28:18-20; Mark 16:15 -16; Luke 13:3, 5; John 3:3, 5

Answer:

18.) If you desired to be saved from your sins and have a home in heaven one day, what would you do in order to be saved? Key: Acts 2:37-38, 41-47; 3:19; 5:29; 8:12, 35-38; 9:18 [22:16]; 10:6, 47-48; 16:15, 30-34; 22:16

Answer:

19.) Was the word of God or the gospel of Jesus Christ (the same thing here) preached throughout the entire world of the first century? Key: Acts 1:8; 13:49 -51; 28:31 [consider this question before you answer: Did Jesus command that the gospel be preached to every creature of every nation?]

Answer:

20.) Does the book of Acts demonstrate salvation (how to be saved), the church (which are the saved, not a building), and the kingdom of God established or fulfilled in the first century? Key: This is a yes or no answer.

Answer:

Bonus Question: In your Judgment, what is the primary theme of the book of Acts in one sentence? (By answering this question, you will demonstrate to the teacher your level of comprehension of the book of Acts. I am interested in your understanding of this book.)
