New Testament Survey Class Two:

Second Class: Overview of John with an emphasis upon Jesus’ Deity. (This class should center its attention upon the author, John’s unique approach to the fact that Deity was made flesh [John 1:1-5, 14]; and that Deity was truly sacrificed on the cross for our sins, being the only acceptable sacrifice for such, and only way to have an acceptable life with God eternally [i.e., 14:6]. Finally, we will emphasize that we can know God through Christ when we consider these evidences presented in this book, but also the entire Bible [cf., 20:30 -31].

1.) How does John 1:1-5 begin? In other words, from what standpoint is Jesus represented, eternal or with beginning? Key: If Jesus was with God, and He was God, then the answer should be implied.

Answer:

2.) Jesus was/is the ______ and the ______ was made flesh. Key: John 1:1-5, 14-18

     Answer:

3.) Deity is something without beginning or end, and therefore God is eternal. He is eternal without time restraints or constraint (cf., 2 Peter 3:8). The phrase “In the beginning…” (John 1:1) is significant to this book. Where else in the Bible is this same phrase found, and what does it signify in regard to time? Key: Genesis 1:1 (This question is meant to challenge you to think. I’m interested in how much research you might do in order to answer this question. Also, I will give you a tip; since Deity has no beginning or end, the phrase does not and cannot have anything to do with the beginning/origin of God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit.)

Answer:

4.) Jesus’ first miracle is recorded in this book. What was that miracle, and what purpose did it server? Key: John 2:1-11

Answer:

5.) Jesus performed many miracles throughout His life. What was the main purpose of miracles? Key: John 20:30-31; cf., 2:11, 18-23; 6:14, 26-29; 12:37-43; Mark 16:19-20 (I want you to read all passages and consider the answer to this question, but the answer should easily be given in John 20:30-31.)

Answer:

6.) What did Jesus say a man must be “again” in order to “see” or “enter” the kingdom? Key: John 3:1-6

      Answer:

7.) Jesus did not give the mechanics of how a man was born again, just the fact that a man must be born again of the Spirit and Water in John 3:3, 5. Upon reading the rest of the New Testament, one can find out “how” this works. Read about the regeneration/born again process in these passages and consider “how” the process works. Did you read these passages and consider the greater context behind the New Birth process? Key: Titus 3:5; James 1:18-21; 1 Peter 1:22-25; 3:21; Romans 6:1-18; 8:1-2 (A simple yes or no answer is sufficient for this question, but I do want you to read and consider the parallels in the New Testament to the New Birth process.)
