 No Longer Be Children

By Sherry Wisseman

Is there anything sweeter than a new born baby? He’s so innocent and dependent on those around him, and so trusting. Milk is all this perfect little being can digest. As he grows, he is introduced to one food at a time, making sure he can digest and tolerate the new food while he continues to grown and strengthen.

Is there anything more exciting than a new Christian? Watching them come out of the waters of baptism with the new excitement that they now have their name written in the Book of Life? They are very much like a new baby when they rise out of the waters. They thrive on the “milk” of the Bible, adding “solid food” for their spiritual growth until they are strong enough to become a seasoned Christian and no longer be considered a babe in Christ.

Life works that way. Ephesians 4:14-15 tells us that we should:

“No longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head”.

How do we grow up in Christ? By studying and learning the word, by delving into it daily and by knowing what He tells us is right and wrong.

Ephesians 4:11 says:

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;” ...

Just as we each grow up and choose our paths, we are each chosen to serve in the body of Christ. Each of us has a gift or a talent and we are to use that gift for the betterment of Christ.  If it is

If it is “... ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching,......” (Romans 12:6)

A very wise woman said to me once that she is not the up-front gal in the church and that’s not where her talents lie. She does not need to be a leader among the women. She said she is the “chink”. For those who don’t know about log cabins and chink, let me explain. When a log cabin is built, there are holes between the logs because they are round and they do not fit perfectly together. The building would be full of holes without the chink. Chink is a material that fills the holes, sealing the building so it is tight and warm. This sister in Christ explained to me there are enough of the little things to do, behind the scenes that need to be done. She said “I am the chink – I fill the holes.” She had learned her talent and matured in Christ to know where she was needed.

Be strong in the Word. Know what His Word teaches so you are not tossed to and fro like a child and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting. (Eph. 4:14)

Know where your works are needed and grow in the Lord so that you can serve as you are called.
