For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. (Hebrews 12:3-4)
Becoming discouraged as we strive for perfection in Him is not uncommon for the Christian. Sometimes discouragement comes from those we are trying to teach the Word of God to, those who are lost and dying. Sometimes it can be from within the body of Christ, those who are supposed to be keeping His Word. Discouragement is not a sin. Succumbing to it is where the problem begins. Christ endured so much more than we have even dreamed.
Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. (John 15:20)
Even though we meet with opposition and persecution from those who are not walking in the light, we must hold on to the faith, steadfast and sure, holding up Christ, exhorting, contending for the faith as instructed. We must even hold strong against those who profess to be in the faith but teach what God has not.
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. (Jude)
As Christians we are to keep on keeping on no matter what we come up against. Our reward for remaining faithful will come later in the form of an eternal life with God.
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. (Galatians 6:9)
Remember the promise we have when we become overwhelmed and discouraged.
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (Corinthians 10:13)
