Lesson Eight: THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

I – The Blind Man Near Jericho (Mt. 20:29-34; Mk. 10:46-52; Lk.18:35-43)

(Category:   ) [                    ]

1.  Consider the three accounts.

     a. Matthew says these things occurred, “As they departed from Jericho,” and that there were two blind men.

     b. Mark says they occurred “(As) they went out of Jericho,” and that it was blind Bartimaeus, who pleaded with him,

     c. Luke writes these things occurred, “As they came to Jericho,” and that a certain blind man came begging.

Now, put on your thinking caps and tell whether they were coming to Jericho or leaving Jericho; and whether there were one blind man, two blind men, or just how many were there?

2. Who did all of these men recognize Jesus to be?

3.  In which accounts did people give glory to God?

II - The Withered Fig Tree (Mt. 21:19-22; Mk. 11:12-14, 20-25)

(Category:      ) [                   ]

1.  Jesus cursed a barren fig tree which, by its leaves, indicated that it had fruit. There is a type of fig tree whose fruit appears before the leaves. Since the presence of the leaves indicated fruit when there were none, Jesus cursed the tree. But in any fig orchard, there are many barren trees, why did he not curse them also?

2. When did Matthew say the tree withered away?

3.  When did Mark say it actually withered away?

4.  What did Peter observe concerning the tree?

III -  Healing Malchus’ Ear (Mt. 26:50-51; Mk. 14:47-53; Lk. 22:49-51; Jn. 18:10)

(Category:   )  [                       ]

1.  How was the multitude that came to take Jesus   able to recognize him?

2.  Who was Malchus?

3.  What did Jesus mean when he said those who came to take him were of the power of darkness? [hint: see Col. 1:13]

4. How did Jesus heal Malchus’ ear?

Thought question (a): When Malchus’ ear was healed, why was there not the usual cry of giving thanks to God?

IV - The Draught of Fish (Jn 21:6-11)

(Category     )  [                 ]

1. How many of the disciples went fishing?

Thought question (b):  Do you think Peter was thinking of going back to being a fisherman since the Lord had been crucified? After having experienced such intimate fellowship with the Lord, could they really go back to the “old ways”??

2. Jesus asked them if their all-night toil of fishing brought them anything. Were they just fishing on the wrong side of the boat?

3.  What did they find there?

4.  Who was it that recognized that it was the Lord?

5.   Did any of the disciples ask who this man was?
