Lesson 12

Lesson Text: Matthew 4:1;10-11; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. (Matt. 4:1;10-11) Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

The important Bible words in this lesson are TEMPTED, DEVIL, and RESIST. Jesus was TEMPTED by the DEVIL but he RESISTED. Because Jesus RESISTED the DEVIL, the DEVIL went away from Jesus. The word TEMPTED means: seeing or thinking of something bad and wanting to do it or to have it. The DEVIL is real! He wants to trick us into being bad. He makes bad things look good when they are really not good for us. RESISTING is our power to make the DEVIL to go away! How do we RESIST? We RESIST when we say, “NO!” just like Jesus did when the DEVIL TEMPTED Him and wanted Him to be bad. Jesus told the DEVIL to go away!

Discuss what the Bible means when it says that the devil is like a “roaring lion” and he wants to “devour” people. Discuss how it is important for children to learn to resist the devil when they are young so they will be good at it when they become adults. Talk about how the Bible tells us that the devil will disguise sin to look good.

lionNOTE TO PARENTS
:
It is very important that you teach your child about the devil and hell from a very young age. If a child understands that the devil is real and wanting people to be bad it will help him in making his choices. If he knows that there is a hell for people who do not love and obey God, it will help him to resist the devil. It is just as important to teach your child about hell as it is to teach your child about heaven.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,... (Proverbs 1:7)
