Excuse Me!

You are doing a great job remembering your manners.  I am so glad that you have been practicing.  Remember that “practice makes perfect”!  This week I would like for you to practice saying “Excuse me”.

When do you say “Excuse me”?

*If you are trying to get past someone say, "Excuse me, please".

*If you need to reach around someone say, "Please excuse me".

*If your mom or dad are talking and you want to speak to them, either wait for your turn or say, "Excuse me, please".

*If someone has said something to you that you did not hear, answer and say, "Excuse me, could you repeat that?

*If you sneeze and someone hears you, then you should say "Excuse me".

*Ask your mom or dad to help you think of other times you should ask others to excuse you.

*Why is it important to say "Excuse me"?  It shows our respect for other people. It is important to show our respect because it tells the person that we love them.

Open your Bible to Matthew, chapter 22, verses 35-40.

“Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”  Matthew 22:35-40

A Pharisee, who knew the old testament laws, tried to trick Jesus with a question. The Pharisee asked Him which of the commandments was the greatest. Jesus told him that the great commandment was to love God with all our heart, mind and soul. The second great commandment was that we should love our neighbors or friends just as much as we love ourselves. If we love our neighbors and friends we want to treat them the way we would want to be treated…with good manners!  By using "excuse me” we prove that we have good manners and teach others the love that Jesus said we should show.

Now, open your Bible to the book of Matthew, chapter 7, verse 12.

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”  Matthew 7:12

Have you heard of the “Golden Rule”? It is:  “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That is what Jesus is talking about in Matthew 7:12. The golden rule is love in action; in other words, treating others well because they are just as important as you are.

Activities:

1. Think about how you would like to be treated. Now choose one person you will try your best to treat like this in the coming week. (Picking someone who is difficult to be around will make an important difference in your week!) **This would make a great "class participation"**

2. Draw a picture of someone practicing the "Golden Rule."

3. Ask your Mom or Dad to please make a chart for you. Each time you say “Excuse me”, put a sticker on your chart.

Have a great week and remember to use your good manners!
