Gods Good Creation

Lesson 3

The Second Day of CreationLarge ViewHey kids! Are you ready to learn what that Bible says about day two of God’s cool creation? Then let’s open our Bibles to the book of Genesis, chapter one, verses six, seven and eight.

Genesis 1: 6-8 "Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day."

Large ViewThese verses might be a little more tricky to understand than the rest of the verses about creation. The best way to explain it would be this:

God’s great earth is starting to take shape and look like what we know today. Instead of a bunch of water floating around, things are starting to separate and take form. Remember in Genesis 1:2, the earth was without form? Now we have the waters below on earth (remember it is still all water) and waters above the earth (like where the rain comes from today, or when we look up to Heaven).  There is no rain until later on in the Bible.  Infact, we are going to learn about the first rain after we are done with creation.  When God seperated the waters, the water that was above the earth was just stored up there.  If the earth needed water, God would cause a mist to come from the ground.  Genesis 2: 5-6 says "For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground." God thought of everything in His wonderful plan! He knew that the earth would need moisture to water the plants and refresh the earth!

Large ViewNow let’s have a few review questions from our Bible verse.

1) What did God divide?__________________________

2) What was under the firmament?_________________

3) What was above the firmament?_________________

4) What did God call the firmament?_________________

5) Fill in the blank of this sentence:

So the evening and the morning were the ______ day.

Large ViewYay! Now it is fun project time! Go politely ask mom or dad for some help and get ready to learn something cool!

Here’s what you need:

One of those clear plastic water bottles (like your store bought water) with the label removed. But hold on to the cap!

What to do:

Fill the bottle up about half way with water. Replace the cap. Set the bottle outside (if it is warm). This may take a day or two, but you will slowly see the waters separate, or divide. You will have most of the water still in the bottom of the bottle, but you will start to notice water drops gathering up near the cap. The water is dividing, just like God planned! If it gets warm enough outside, you might get to see a "cloud" or "fog" develop in your water bottle. Real clouds are what bring us the rain, and fog is water that we can see hovering in the air. God thought of everything!

Large ViewPlease think about your memory verse this week. If you go over to a friend’s house or your grandparent’s, show them this easy project and tell them how God is the one that created the waters and made them be able to divide!

Genesis 1:6 "Then God said, let it divide the waters from the waters."
