IMPORTANT TO KNOW!

The Bible uses many figures of speech. Jesus often used them. And we use them too! Someone might say, "I am so hungry, I could eat a bear." Or, "That man was driving so fast, his car was flying!" Of course, we don’t really mean that we would eat a bear, or that the man’s car was actually flying in the air.

But we use such figures of speech to show that we are very hungry, or that the man was driving so very fast. We use other figures of speech to show how important what we are saying is. So when Jesus uses a figure of speech, He does so to show us that what He is saying is very, very important.

If we don’t know about figures of speech, some verses in the Bible cannot be understood.

Bread From Heaven

The people were following Jesus because they wanted more food. They spoke of that time long ago, when Moses was leading God’s people out of Egyptian Bondage when they ate of manna, which was a sweet wafer or some type of bread. They were trying to get Jesus to feed them again. But Jesus wanted to do more for them than to give them food. Remember, the purpose of signs or miracles, was to give a message. They had already seen Him do a miracle. So Jesus taught them about Himself.

True or False Write an "X" over the False statements.

Moses gave the people of God manna. (verse 32)

The true bread came from heaven. (verse 32)

The bread that came down from heaven gives life. (verse 33).

The people said, We don’t want that bread. (verse 34)

The people said, Give us this bread always. (verse 34)

Jesus said, I will do a miracle to give you more bread. (verse 34).

Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. (verse 35).

Jesus said, "He who comes to me shall never hunger." (verse 35)

Jesus said, "He who believes in me shall never thirst." (verse 35).

The people had seen the signs He had done, and believed in him. (verse 36).

Yes or No?

As the bread of life, can we literally eat Jesus with our mouths?

Would literally eating Jesus help us to never be thirsty for water again?

Of course, you answered "no" to both of those questions. Jesus was not talking about physical food and water. He was using figures of speech.

Jesus taught the people that all of us have needs in our souls. To have a healthy body we eat good food. But there is something more important than our bodies! Believing in Jesus will give health or life to our souls forever!

Come back next week for more about Jesus, the Bread of life!
