Lesson 14 ANSWERS
Lesson Text: John 5: 31-47
1. The Apostles were “witnesses” concerning Christ. Tell in your own words how the Apostles were witnesses of Christ. What is their testimony?
They saw the miracles He performed, were at His crucifixion and death and then ate and talked with Him after He was resurrected. They knew for sure He was the Son of God.
2. Another way to determine the meaning of Bible words is to look at the context. Often this will reveal the true meaning. Read the following passage and from the context describe baptism: Romans 6:3-5.
"Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were BURIED with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was RAISED from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the lieness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection," Baptism is a burial and a resurrection or raising, for us, in water.
3. Family Discussion/Challenge question:
Discuss why “I want to witness to you about the Lord” is a new, or a different, meaning from the New Testament use of the word “witness”. Hint: Did the Apostles see Jesus? Did Jesus see His Father? Did the Father see the Son? Did you see Jesus?
4. How many times can you find the words “witness/witnesses” and “testify/testified/testimony” in the text below?
Witness/witnesses: 8;
testify/testified/testimony: 3
“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
