Kid's Korner

Lesson 28

Lesson Text: John 8:21-30

Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” Then they said to Him, “Who are You?”

And Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.” They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.

Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.” As He spoke these words, many believed in Him. (John 8:21-30)

Family Discussion:

Discuss what a prophet did.  Take turns naming OT prophets and tell what the prophet foretold.  Name a NT prophet besides Jesus.

Jesus was the greatest Prophet who ever lived.  Moses, who was also a prophet, foretold of the coming of Jesus.  This is what he said:

“And the LORD said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him. (Deut.18:17-19)

The Israelites had been looking for the great Prophet Moses told them about for a long, long time.  After Jesus was baptized and the Holy Spirit had descended upon Him, His ministry began.  He went from place to place telling people to get ready for His kingdom because it was near.  He healed people and did many wonderful signs.  This caused people to listen to Him even more and to wonder, “Is this the Great Prophet Moses told us would come?”  One day Jesus raised up from the dead a young boy who was the only son of a widow.  After Jesus raised him up from the dead, the Bible tells us this is what happened:

Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” (Luke 7:16)

Just before He was crucified Jesus went into Jerusalem and multitudes were waiting to see Him. Do you know what a multitude is?  A multitude is many, many, many people.  We understand, therefore, that great throngs of people believed that Jesus was the Prophet.  This is what happened when He came into Jerusalem:

And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” (Matt. 21:10-11)

A prophet is someone who foretells an event that is in the future.  A prophecy is the event that he foretells.  In the text of our lesson today we can find an important prophecy given by Jesus.  Jesus said:

“When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. (John 8:28)

This is a prophecy that He would be crucified.  They would nail Him to the cross and then lift up the cross, put it in a hole in the ground and stand it up.  In another place Jesus gave this same prophecy in a little different way:

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:14-15)
