Lesson 27

Lesson text: John 8:12-20

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”  The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true.”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.  You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.  And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.

It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.  I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.” Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.” These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

Would you like to have the “light of life”?  Jesus promised to give the  “light of life” to those who follow Him.  What does that mean?  The verses below will tell us about spiritual “light” and “darkness”.  Hopefully they will help us to understand the “light of life” that Jesus promises to His disciples:

For You will save the humble people, but will bring down haughty looks. For You will light my lamp; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.  (Ps. 18:27-28)  You have laid me in the lowest pit, In darkness, in the depths. Psalm 88:6

The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?  (Psalm 27:1)

The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, (Proverbs 6:23)

Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness. (Isaiah 8:22)

Family Activity:

Divide the pages of today’s newspaper between members of the family.  Look for and list from the paper things you find which belong in the “light” category and things that belong in the “darkness” category. Try to find 20 items. After you complete this activity tell whether you found more things for the “light” category or more things for the “darkness” category.  Our world needs more “light of life” from Jesus, don’t you agree?

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:14-16)
