 The Kingdom of Christ

Lesson 7

We have been studying about the authority of Christ.  In a previous lesson we studied that God gave Him all authority.  We have considered different aspects of His authority:

 He is our Lord

 1.  The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ--He is______  ___  ____....(Acts 10:36)

 2.  Which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and _____  _____  ______ (1 Tim.6:15)

 He is our King

3.  Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You  __  _____  ______?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."(John 18:37)

He is Reigning

 4.  For He must ______  till He has put all enemies under His feet.     (1 Corinthians 15:25)

He Has Power and is Above all Other Power

 5.  ….Which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all ________  and ________ and ________ and ________, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (Ephesians 1:20-21)

 He Has Dominion

 6.  To Him be the ______ and the _________  forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 5:11)

 Everyone will bow to Him

 7.  ….That at the name of Jesus every______   _____  ______ , of those in heaven, and of those on earth… and of those under the earth, (Philippians 2:10)

Therefore, there is one conclusion we can come to: If Christ is Lord and King, if He has a dominion and power, and if He is reigning and every knee will bow to Him, then there is no doubt that He must also have a Kingdom.

In our lesson “Thy Kingdom Come” we followed prophecy through the Bible concerning the coming of Christ and of His kingdom.  We notice that all reference to Christ’s kingdom in the Old Testament was in future tense.  We also noted that in an earlier prophecy that it was stated that the kingdom was not near.  When time for the kingdom to begin drew near the prophecy changed to, “the kingdom is near (or at hand).

In this lesson we are going to pay close attention to the references to the kingdom after the Day of Pentecost when Peter  and the rest of the Apostles received the keys to the kingdom.

Notice in the following verses that when the kingdom is mentioned, it is mentioned in the present tense and no longer future tense.

8..  "And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone ________  ______  _________ of God, will see my face no more.        (Acts 20:25)

9.  For the kingdom of God ___  ____  eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Rom.14:17)

10.  For the kingdom of God ___  _____ in word but in power.

(1 Corinthians 4:20)

11.  He ____  _________  us from the power of darkness and ______  ___  ____  the kingdom of the Son of His love, (Colossians 1:13)

12.  And Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only  ______  ______  ____  the kingdom of God who are of the circumcision; they have proved to be a comfort to me. (Colossians 4:11)

13.  That you would walk worthy of God who ____  _____  ______  His own kingdom and glory. (1 Thessalonians 2:12)

14.  Which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God,  that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, ____  ______  ______  _____  _________ . (2 Thessalonians 1:5)

15.  Therefore, since ___  ____  _______  a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. (Hebrews 12:28)

16.  Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ ____  ______  , ….  Revelation 12:10

Has salvation come?  Has the power of His Christ come?  The answer is “yes” and “yes”  the kingdom has come.

How long will Christ rule as king in His kingdom?

17.  Then comes _____  ______, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. (1 Cor.15:24)

From this verse we learn that Christ will reign until the end of time.  After that He will give the kingdom back to the Father.  At that time the Father will abolish all authority but His own.

18.  For He _____  ______ till He has put all enemies under His feet. (1 Cor.15:25)

From this verse we learn that Christ will reign as king in His kingdom until He has put all enemies under His feet.

On earth, men have authority.  Government has the authority to rule over other men.  Men have authority to rule over their wives. Parents have authority to rule over children and so on. Men can abuse their authority.  Men can even reject God’s authority.  But there is a day coming when mankind will surrender all authority and every human who has ever lived will bow before God.  At this time all enemies will be under Christ’s feet, in other words, forced to submit to His authority.  There will no longer be free will as we have it now on earth.  Christ will reign until then and then He will preside over Judgment.

19.  … For we shall all stand before the _______  _______  of Christ. 11For it is written:  "As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God."  12So then each of us shall _____  _______  of himself to God. (Rom.14:10b-12)

20.  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11and that every ______  ______  ___________  that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil.2:9-11)

21.  The last enemy that will be destroyed is _______  . (1 Cor.15:26)

This verse teaches us that death is an enemy of Christ. If Christ reigns until death is destroyed, that means He will reign until He destroys the earth (and after the Judgment).

22.  For "He has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him  ___  ___________. (1 Cor.15:27)

God the Father put all authority under Christ.  However, God the Father is the exception to the rule.  He is above all authority, including Christ.

23.  Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also ____  _______  to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. (1 Cor.15:28)

After all things are subdued under the authority of the Father and the Son, then the Son will submit Himself under the authority of the Father.  The Father then will be the only source of authority that exists.

Another point to think about here is that those who teach that Christ will establish an earthly physical kingdom from which He will reign, cannot possibly be correct in light of the above passage.  These verses teach that Christ will be giving the kingdom up at the time they teach He would be establishing it.

Christ has a glorious kingdom and you can be in His kingdom now.  When we obey the gospel, God adds us to His kingdom.  Let us learn to submit to His authority in His kingdom and to all the authority that He has established on earth.

Let’s Review:

24.  Name the different aspects of Christ’s authority that we have considered.

25.  What message did Christ teach about the time of the beginning of His kingdom?

26.  What did Christ tell Peter he would give him?

27.  When did Peter receive it?

28.  How does one get into the kingdom of Christ?

29.  How long will Christ reign in His kingdom?

… "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3-4)
