The Just Right Wardrobe

By Vickie Oliver

“And having food and clothing with these we shall be content.” (I Timothy 6:8)

‘A wardrobe that is just right’…. Hummm (I’m thinking). Well if we are thinking about what is in our closet, would any of us agree our wardrobe is just right? I rather doubt it. That would mean we wouldn’t need to go shopping! The thrift stores might go out of business and who can walk past a SALE sign?

Have you ever had this experience? You are getting ready to go out and you cannot figure out what to wear. No, the first outfit just isn’t right. Nope. The second one won’t do. “I have nothing to wear!” The third outfit is all wrong! Now I have a pile on the bed to put away. “Oh, I’m only going to the park to play with the kids. Where are my jeans?” Maybe we have too many choices. Wait! I’m not saying to throw out your clothes. Hmm, throw them out? More shopping!!

Okay, I know you have all had that experience at least once in your life, BUT did you notice the seven-letter word at the end of 1 Timothy 6:8. It is CONTENT. So what does content mean? to be enough, suffice, be sufficient. If we look at only this verse by itself, all we need to have is food and clothes. Why do we need anything else in life? Let’s look at the whole picture by backing up a few verses and begin at verse 6. “Now godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.

9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." (1 Timothy 6:6-12.)

Putting all these verses together gives us a much better picture of what Paul was telling Timothy. That with godliness and contentment there is great gain. Being wealthy is not what life is all about and it is not what God wants. God wants us to be godly.

We need to strive for verse 11 everyday of our life. In Hebrews 13:5 it says “…be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.” God is not looking to see who has the most or is the best dressed. “For there is no partiality with God.” Romans 2:11. It would be far more important to have God with us everyday than to have the right wardrobe.

The just right wardrobe we need to put on everyday is:

t Righteousness

t Godliness

t Faith

t Love

t Patience

t Gentleness

And this helps us fight the good fight and hold on to eternal life.

Do not let your outer wardrobe get in the way of serving God. But remember: He sees you every day, so make Him proud.
