It is Finished

By Billie Duty

Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.'"

Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!" And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. (Luke 23:44-49)

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:28-30)

After being brutally beaten, mocked and having a crown of thorns placed on His head we find the Jewish Leaders seem to be getting their way with Jesus. (Matt. 27:26&29)

We now take up with Jesus hanging on the cross, He has already been there for about 3 hours. The time is noon, many are standing around both those who loved Him and those who hated Him. It grows very dark in the middle of the day and it remains dark all over the earth until 3:00 p.m. The temple veil was split into two pieces from top to bottom and the earth quaked. (Matt. 27:51) Jesus knew all things were now accomplished and the scriptures would be fulfilled. Jesus speaks out with a loud voice, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit'" and "It is finished" and breathed His last giving up His spirit.

With all of these things happening at about the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.) many around beat their breasts. The Roman centurion glorified God and those with him guarding Jesus said "Truly this was the Son of God"! (Matt. 27:34) Those who loved Him still stand nearby watching.

Sadly though, after His death, they go about as if nothing has happened. They went to Pilate asking him to break their legs so that their bodies could be removed from the crosses. (It could be that these are not the same Jews demanding His death.) The soldiers find that Jesus is already dead and do not break His legs, again in fulfillment of the scriptures. The soldier plunges his spear into His side, blood and water flowed out.

Blood and water... we are cleansed by the blood of Christ when we submit to the watery grave of baptism and remain faithful to His commands. (Heb. 9:14; 1 John 1:7; Rom. 6)
