The Online Bible Class  March-April 2006 term

SYLLABUS “DECISIONS & THEIR CONSEQUENCES”

GALATIANS 6:7

“… for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap…”

As you proceed through this course, you will be given directions that are easy to follow.  At each step you will be told exactly what to do next—what materials to study, what written work or activities to do, when to take a test, and what written work to submit.

REQUIREMENTS:

This course is designed to help you make wise choices in life, based on what God would have you do.  We will base our study in the Bible accounts of various characters that have made good or bad choices and then try our best to relate those accounts to our own lives.  In every case we will be studying scriptures which give clear directions.

PROCEEDING THROUGH THE COURSE

In every lesson there will be easy directions.  There will be two types of questions for this course.  Short answer questions (fill-in-the-blank, True/False and one word responses) or longer answers to questions which must be proved from scripture.

Lesson 1 is due                                     Jan. 7th

Lesson 2 is due                                     Jan. 14th

Lesson 3 is due                                     Jan. 21st

Lesson 4 is due                                     Jan. 28th

Lesson 5 is due                                     Feb. 4th

Lesson 6 is due                                     Feb. 11th

Lesson 7 is due                                     Feb. 18th

Lesson 8 is due                                     Feb. 25th

You should begin reading/studying each lesson as early in the week as possible.  Whenever appropriate, I may suggest WWW sites to use as references.  There may be specific questions about these reading selections.  You should find them helpful for coming to a better understanding of how personal choices affect your lives and those around you.

From time to time you may be asked to provide a present day example of someone who has reaped the consequences of a bad decision.   You may use news reports or personal examples.  You may find it profitable to explore online sites. If you like to use Bibles online for easy reference, you can find a great site at http://www.biblegateway.com/.  Our policy is to use either the KJV or the NKJV for all courses.  Remember that the fill-in-the-blank questions will be based on the KJV

Please try to send your answers to the questions by Thursday if possible and your comments to what you have studied by Friday, so that I will have time to organize all emails and send them back to you by Saturday each week.  By Friday, you will write a personal response to the lesson and participate in on-line "discussions" by Saturday.  This exercise has several advantages, the main one being that you can participate in “class discussions” even though we are not physically together with a group.  Because I am half way around the world sleeping when you are awake and awake when you are sleeping, and because few women have the same schedules even if they live in the same city, we will not use the IM option for live discussions.  All our discussions will be email messages only.

Instructions for answering the questions: Students may select and copy the question part of the lesson and paste into a new email. They may then answer the questions in a color other than black for easy grading. When finished, send to Beth Johnson.  ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PUT THE LESSON TITLE IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE EMAIL MESSAGE.

Consider another option for sending answers to lessons. For fill-in-the-blank answers, you will find that each blank has a number assigned to it. You may also make up an answer sheet for each lesson and number it according to the number of answers for that week's lesson. For instance, if Lesson One has 40 answers, you should number your answer sheet from 1-40 and type the answer for that question next to its number. That will make it easier to grade, especially if we have a large class. Email your answer sheet in the message window to Beth Johnson.  Since it is not safe to open attachments, please send your answer sheets within the email message window.  ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PUT THE LESSON TITLE IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE EMAIL MESSAGE.

By the time you have finished all the lessons, you should be ready to take a final test.  You may use your Bible and any notes (saved in a folder on your computer or as hard copies in a bound folder) to take an open book test.  The only request I make is that you not ask outside help from anyone.

 TIME NEEDED:

IN THE BEGINNING, IT IS ASSUMED THAT YOU WILL SPEND APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS EACH WEEK ON THIS COURSE.  You may do the work much faster as time goes on.  There are eight lessons for the course. Please do not wait until the final week to send in a stack of lessons.  When completing written assignments, be sure to use your own words to explain your thoughts.  I need to know what you know.

 MATERIALS:

There is nothing to buy or find at the library.  Your lessons will be online at: http://www.stgcoc.com/obc_course_descriptions.htm

For those of you who like to have a hard copy of materials in your hand, I suggest that you keep your lessons in the following way:

Hard cover 3-ring binder with at least a 1” spine for keeping copies of each lesson.
Or perhaps a soft-cover folder with brads for easy insertion/removal of papers.

POINT SYSTEM:

Credit will be based on the number of points gained from the accumulated answer papers from weekly assignments and responses to other student’s questions/comments, using the following scale:

*Answering questions for each lesson: 4 points each lesson for a total of 32 points
Comments/Responses about things you have learned, appreciated, or disagreed with in each lesson: 2 points each lesson for a total of 16 points
Response to other student’s comments: 2 points each lesson for a total of 16 points
Long paper (topic of choice—five to seven paragraphs long): 36 points maximum (This paper will be explained in more detail as the course develops.)
Total: 100 points maximum

The final grade will be based on the number of points accumulated:

A+ 97-100

*You will not be penalized for wrong answers in your weekly assignments, if you make corrections and send those back to me privately.  These corrections will not be posted to all students.

HOW TO GET HELP FROM YOUR TEACHER:

Feel free to write me for help.  I will be in touch with you often by e-mail, and
expect you to reply to these messages.  I may send corrections or additions to the assignments
or simply give you additional information relating to the work that you have to do. If I cannot reach
you or get you to respond, you will miss some important information for the course.  My email address is online-bs@chennaitts.org.
