“Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of His pasture.” (Psalm 100:3)
I remember after the birth of our first child how proud I was. Not only had I managed to carry a pregnancy to term but I had birthed that child with no medical intervention in my own home. I remember the feelings of ownership I had for her at the time. After all, hadn’t we created her? I kept thinking of her as my own.
Then I had a dramatic change of mind. Some years later I was pregnant with our 6th child. I began having serious difficulties and this child was going to be born with life-threatening birth defects, if he made it through the birth. I hadn’t done anything different. I had taken care what I ate and drank. I was in good health.
This dramatic departure from my earlier non-eventful pregnancies and births suddenly showed me how much was in the hands of our Creator God and how little we truly have to do with the process of creating life. How real the Psalmist’s words became to me.
“. . . it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves;”
We are not the creators. We are the creation! Not only did He make us, but He wants to care for us as well.
“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
He was willing to come to earth, live as we live and die a terrible death to reconcile us to Him! He did the unthinkable that we might be able to choose life through His atoning blood. He loves us that much. We belong to Him!
He wants us to come willingly. We can admit His ownership and live our lives in humble, thankful submission to Him or we can continue on in denial and live our lives for ourselves. It is our choice.
The consequence if we choose to live for ourselves is eternal death without hope. The promise if we choose to live for Him is eternal life.
We can acknowledge God’s supreme ownership of us, and live for Him. We can accept that ‘everlasting consolation’ that Paul mentions in II Thessalonians 2:16 or we can live our lives in whatever way we please and die, never knowing the God who loved us enough to suffer and die for us. It’s our choice.
Which will you choose?
