 Go and Make Disciples

By Billie Sue Duty

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. (Matthew 28:16-20)

Christ Himself, after His resurrection from the dead, gave the command for His followers to go teach others.

Notice he says to "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations." In order to make followers, one must be taught to know what to follow. We are to teach others how to become a follower of Christ "baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16). One must be taught the basics to know how to be a true follower of Christ. After we have taught one how to become a follower of Christ (a Christian), Jesus tells us that we should be "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you;".

We must teach and continue to teach so that we do not fall! Looking at this same command from a different writer we find what we are to be teaching others.

And He [Jesus] said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15- 16)

We are to teach the Gospel knowing that those who believe and are obedient to the teachings and baptized will be saved, but those who do not have the obedient faith will be condemned "in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Thessalonians 1:8).

We must continue teaching so one can know how to live faithful till the end.

Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Revelation 2:10)

And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:22)

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58)

We must stand firm in the Word or in the end we will be found eternally lost.
