"Delight thyself in the
Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (Psalm
37:4)
This passage is used often to teach that
it is pleasing to God to ask for anything and everything we
desire in this world: money, a big house, expensive car. I
have even heard some giving God thanks because they won the
lottery!
We would do well to read the following verses
and understand what our desire should be.
Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust
also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
And he shall bring forth thy
righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the Lord, and wait
patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth
in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to
pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake
wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers
shall be cut off; but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall
inherit the earth. (Psalm 37:5-9)
A little that a righteous man hath
is better than the riches of many wicked. (Psalm 37:16)
What will happen to us if we commit our way unto the Lord?
- The Lord will uphold us
- Our inheritance shall be for ever
- We will be satisfied in the day of famine
- If we fall the Lord will lift us up
- We will never be forsaken
- We will be preserved for ever
- We will speak wisdom
- We will have the law of God in our hearts
- We will be exalted
- Our end will be peace
- The Lord will be our strength
- We will be delivered from the wicked and be saved
But the salvation of the righteous
is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And
the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them
from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him
(Psalm 37: 39-40)
