Comforted Of God

By Sharon Tomlinson

But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me: give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.

Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.  (Psalm 86:15-17)

We are studying 2 Corinthians in our Sunday morning Bible class.  I have been a Christian for about 40 years (okay, that was shocking for me when I counted the years but I was just a child).  I’m embarrassed when I consider how little I know about the scriptures.  Our study this week pointed out yet another example of this.  I had not considered the purpose of God’s compassion and comfort until we read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 and answered the question, “What is the proper use of comfort we receive from God?”

At first one might think what kind of question is that?  Isn’t that just one of the many blessings we have in Christ?  It is a wonderful blessing but there is more to learn about God’s comfort.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort: who comforted us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.  (1 Cor.1:3-4)

There it is again, our purpose on this earth is to serve others, to teach others, to comfort others, to love others above ourselves.  Just as God and Christ loved us, we are to love others.  That love does not end with us but it is to be passed along in forgiveness to others as we are forgiven, in love as we are loved and in comfort as we are comforted.

 How do we receive comfort?

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward the another according to Christ Jesus that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.  (Romans 15:4-7)
