"Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress. Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her lure you with her eyelids. For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. Can a man take fire to his bosom and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be seared?" (Prov.6:23b-28)
A reproof is a sharp, humbling, rebuke. Here it appears to be God's way to firmly remind mankind to stay on the strait, i.e., narrow path (2 Timothy 3:16).
We are to resist temptation's attractive dressing, to turn away from the enticement of sin no matter in what alluring clothing it chooses to hide its deadly poison. (James 4:7, 8)
God's will, when correctly taught, cloaks mankind's daily life with protective gear that is very clear. Often the paths of daily life are dark and full of twists, turns, sharp corners, potholes, mountains, and gorges. When embedded in our hearts, though, the Spirit of God's Word becomes much like a spotlight, shining ahead of us, to show us where we are headed. (1 John 1: 5-7)
We all tire of the world's tries to wheedle, coax, and inveigle us to sin. If we succumb, however, we will have voluntarily stripped away every stitch of clean spiritual attire, our sin filled, and dead soul appearing so putrid to God that He must turn away!!
"Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death." (Jas. 1:12, 14-15.)
The wise, when they begin to sense a weakness in their resolve, immediately pray. They don the protective armor spoken of in scripture (Ephesians 6:10-18) and are then able to retain a heart clothed in pure, white garments, a heart with which God can continue to be pleased.
