Lesson 8
Do you remember the story about the little boy who saved his village by sticking his finger in the dike to plug up the tiny leak? He was wise enough to realize that the tiny leak would grow bigger and eventually break the dam and cause great flooding and death.
Thirty years ago a few godly brethren began to notice tiny departures from God’s Word some members of the church were introducing and they tried to warn others. They were viewed almost as crazed alarmist or as troublemakers. The attitude held by many was that if we addressed the little things that were creeping in, it would just create discord and tension. Others refused to believe that such well known brethren could be involved in anything at all questionable.
This did not stop us from trying to warn others that there was a leak in the dike. Today as the flood waters of error engulf our precious brotherhood, the spiritual death toll is great and still rising. No one who has survived would argue that we all should have been more diligent in warning others before it was too late.
Today, many seem to have the same casual attitude towards the Judgment Day of Christ as many did towards the error that was creeping in thirty years ago.
An attitude of Universalism (everyone will be saved) has now tiptoed into the Church. This false notion is born of the idea that since God’s Grace is for all, everyone will be saved.
God’s grace is for all, but not everyone will receive God’s grace.
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. (Titus 2:11)
The grace of God brings salvation. The ice cream truck that everyone on our street sees (and hears, because of the annoying music) brings ice cream, but that does not mean that everyone on our street has ice cream.
What does God’s grace do? It teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lust. It teaches us to live soberly, righteous and godly.
Why would grace do that if it didn’t matter and if God is planning to save us regardless of how we lived? If we correctly understand grace we will know that His grace teaches us to deny ungodliness so that we will not be consumed by His wrath. Verse 14 explains that He wants to redeem us from lawless deeds. He desires for Himself those who are pure and zealous for good works.
