The Authority of Christ

Lesson 5

 The Government Is Upon His Shoulder

 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder, and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, 

Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Is. 9:6-7)

 1. In the passage above, find all the words that indicate Christ’s authority.  I found at least 6.  How many can you find?  List them.

 Christ Has All Authority

2. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All _________ has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18)….

 3. ___  therefore and ______ disciples of all the nations, ________  them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19)….

 The Father Put All Things Under Christ’s Authority

9. The Father loves the Son, and has given ____  ________ into His hand. (John 3:35)

 He Has Power

He has power to save:

 11. “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to _____ them.” (Luke 9:56)

 He has the power to pardon:

 His power is infinite:

 He demonstrated to His disciples His power over nature:

 He had power over His own life:

 His power is life-giving:

While on earth He used His power to do many wonders:

 What is our relationship to Christ’s authority?

 He is our King:

22. Behold, a king will ________  in righteousness (Isa. 32:1)

23. "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall_______  _____  _______ ,  And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. (Jeremiah 23:5)

 When did Christ become King?

Peter tells us in his very first sermon which he preached on the Day of Pentecost: 

29. Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch _______ , that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. (Acts 2:29)….

30. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his ______ ,         (Acts 2:30)

David was a prophet. He prophesied that one of his descendents would be the Christ.  Christ would be raised up to sit on His throne. 

31. He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the _____________ of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. (Acts 2:31)….

 32. This Jesus God has _____  ___, of which we are all witnesses. (Acts 2:32)….

In the following verse David calls Jesus his Lord:

34. "For David _____  ______ ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: "The LORD (Father) said to my Lord (Christ), "Sit at My right hand, (Acts 2:34)….

35. Till I make _______  enemies Your footstool." (Acts 2:35)

Christ had died to save every faithful person who had ever lived or who would ever live in the future.  God gave Him a kingdom and His dominion would be over all people, nations and languages.  He would be king over all the saved!

40. "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both ______  and Christ." (Acts 2:36)

Christ ascended into heaven and He was given His throne. Besides being made King over all nations, God made angels and all authorities and powers subject to Him.

41. There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made  ______  ___  _____.  (1 Peter 3:21-22)
